I recently purchased a 1948 8n. It has been converted to 12 volt. My problem is this. The front mount coil has a wire that is made into and a part of the top of the coil that does not come out. It runs toward the battery box where it plugs into the top of another coil that is the small cylinder type that is about six inches tall. What is the purpose of the two coils??? Can I do away with the one in the back and put a new 12 volt coil on the front? Help!!!!!

I have one of these "round coil conversions" At first I thought it was homemade, but it is light as a feather and I do not know how they took the "guts" of the square coil out without ruining the rivets or showing pry marks.

Sounds like the front coil has been modified to take a newer style round can coil. Yes you can remove the round coil and get a 12 volt front (square can) coil. You would need to add one of Dell's "trick" 1/2 ohm 20 watt resister to make for longer life of your new front coil. [That is 'cause the 12 volt front coils ARE for 12 volts but your alternator produces 14.7 volts].
I would say leave the round can coil if it works. The round can coils are cheaper and work better than the 12 volt front square can coils.

Will,

If the conversion to a round-can coil is working, unless originality is the issue here, LEAVE IT ALONE!

The round-can coil is Much MORE robust, and besides, probably gives a better spark than the OEM-style coil.

Pertronix Ignition even makes a modern kit to convert to the round-can coil.

I didn't have time to get into the points and condensor when I looked at it late the other afternoon. I do know there is no fire to the can coil. I am planning to replace the points tomorrow when I go back to where the tractor is.

This is my first adventure with an old tractor and I am definitely not a novice mechanic. Can't wait to wade off into the restoration. I do know the tractor was running 10 years ago when parked and the person that had it (passed away) was a perfectionist with everything.

Will,
For more insight into coil conversions, have you seen this thread started by HOBO several days ago?

I'm not saying everyone should convert to the round-can coil, and, obviously, any "purist" doing a restoration will not, but I'm posting this to show that a replacing the OEM-type coil with a round-can coil can be a viable alternative for a working tractor.

The OEM-type coils are filled with insulating tar, and can't take as much abuse (leaving key on accidently, for example), as an oil-filled round-can coil. The oil transfers heat to the can, and keeps the innards from melting as easily.
