lets see where to start, maybe with a disclaimer stating,"I sometime think I know more then I really do" my tractor partner Glen brought home a real winner of a 9n the only thing it had going for it was the rear tires, moter stuck, would not shift, missing all sorts of parts,to make long story shorter, she is now running, however the genny I found in the back shed that I thought was a 6 volt by all outword appearence turns out is actually a 12 volt,I have already purchased a 6volt battery, this where you all come in!! should I convert to 12 volt or can I use this the same way as an alternator,ie resistors

Hmm.. it's a genny that fits on the 9n... what makes you think it is 12v and not 6v? Is it a 3 brush adjustable job? Is a 2-brush with a regulator?

it looks and fits just like the rest of n tractor, gennys.but it is deffinetly throwing out 14.2 volts.the only thing I noticed, that made me check it in the first place was an adjustment screw on the back.with an arrow to regulate the voltage,so being the optimist I turned it counter-clock wise,I was sure this adjustment would be incrementally small, and it was! no more then a half a volt diff.

Did you measure this as an open circuit? I wouldn't be surprised if an open circuit volagew would be sky high. Your average every day 1/2 amp trickle battery chargey can kick 17+v on an open circuit.. even if it only charges at 13 to 14v.. etc.

I'd load it with a battery and see what the charge voltage and current was. Those 3rd brush adjustables could be turned up decently high.. easily to cover 9v to charge a 8v battery.. some even report turning them up enough to charge a 12v...

Also.. by saying that it had the brackets to fit the rest of the N tractors.. you should prpbably specify front mount..as side mounts were saddle jobs..e tc.

Still do a load test ont hat thing.. may still be correct..

If you are sure that it is a 12V generator, you have some choices to make that are more personel preference than that one is significantly better than the other. Since you already have a new 6V battery, the easiest and probably most economical would be to just swap the 12V generator for an original type 6V generator. If you WANT to convert to 12V AND use the 12V generator that you have, you should get a 12V voltage regulator from a mid 60s Ford (Mustang, Falcon, F-100, etc)and use that wiring diagram as well. (It should be basically the same). Check the 12V generator to make sure that it is good before spending money and time on 12V parts. If you have trouble finding a wiring diagram, re-post. I am sure that I have some. Have Fun.

Don't you think that a vreg from a 12v thousand series would be more correct.. of course.. this assumes his 12v genny is b-circuit. Depending on where it came from.. it could be a-circuit.. etc.. easy enough to check though..

Maybe. I would need to take a look at the generator, then pick a voltage regulator to match. It is much easier when you can see what you are working with.

Deffinately. For all we know this genny may not even fit the brackets on the 9n, .. thus making it a mechanical job plus a electrical job...

once circuit type is known, and voltage is determined.. most any appropriate circuit vreg would work.. as long as you made sure it didn't over / under charge due to field coil ohm value differences..e tc..

Hey Loren, resistors are used for the ignition so that the distributer runs on 6 volts, they aren't used to knock down the charge from 12 to 6 volt.If you use a 6 volt battery then you use a 6 volt generator, the same with 12 volt. You don't mix 6 and 12.Hope this helps.
