Please correct if wrong. If you use a 12v Alt. AND a 12v front mount coil, you STILL need a resistor to prevent 'cooking' the coil...yes ??

The problem is that the 12 volt coil IS actually for 12 volts. But yout "12 volt" alternator produces about 14.7 volts -- hence the problem. ;-)
(and the need for the resister.)

When i converted my 9n to 12 volts [ from 8 volts :^( ] the kit came with a resister and a 12 volt coil.

Our (absent) friend Dell always suggests his "trick current-limiting resistor" of about .5 Ohms @ 20 Watts.

It does seem like most of the "12-Volt" front-mount coils really do need this resistor to prevent the coil from overheating (and probably failing), and for longer breaker point life.
