I have just purchased a 1941 9N. The previous owner would disconnect the battery cables every time he turned the tractor off. I have done the same. After filling the battery with water, the tractor will not start. I have recharged the battery and now I am hearing a hissing sound from the positive battery post. I noticed sparks coming from the other end of the pos cable. Any suggestions?

You say "now I am hearing a hissing sound from the positive battery post".

This is NOT good!

It is either just a poor connection between the battery cable, and the battery post that needs a good cleaning, or a fault in the cable, where the copper cable is not making contact with the cable end.

Sometimes, an internal connection in the battery will fail.

ANYHOW, any of the above can cause a battery explosion.

Wear suitable goggles when working around that battery, trying to figure out where the poor connection is.

If you have ever had a battery explode, you will know why I suggest this.

First, thoroughly clean the posts and the cable ends, and make sure the connections at the starter swithc, the starter, and the ground connection are CLEAN, BRIGHT, AND TIGHT!

Go to Walmart with 3 bucks buy a battery disconnect switch if you don't want to dig in. Loosening cables on battery wil cause erosion, corrosion, and unreliability. From experience DG

Just to add to what sound has said. You sound like you may have bad battery cables and or loose/dirty connections. Clean and tighten up all the connections on the battery cables and see what happens. Sparks tell me you have bad/loose cables

Sounds like a bad short to me. Might have a bad diode in the alternator. Start pulling wires till the short stops.. and then you found the problem.

An alternator problem would not be good. It was just replaced last July.

If you had to disconnect the battery cable to prevent current draw, and have recently replaced tha alternator.. and dind't investigate the problem.. then.. I'm surprised that you wonder why it still has a problem...

My next guess is that the wireing to the alternator is wrong.. for instance.. the wire that provides excite cuttent may be hooked to #2 instead of the correct #1 terminal.. causing a current draw.. etc.

Is there a diagram on the net that shows the correct way to hook-up the alternator, just to make sure it was done right?

I had a chance to go thru the the wires and tightened as much as I could. I hooked the battery up and saw no sparks, but still won"t crank. After about one min. i noticed a wire getting hotter and hotter. It lead to a what looks like (but not) a "silver" button at the bottom of the dash, left of the steering column, below the ammeter. Any suggestions?
