This one goes out to all you electrical system wizards. Yes!, I want to convert my 861 back to 6 volts! All I can tell you is the previous owner did a single wire alternator conversion. What do I need to look for, remove, and add back to accomplish this. I already have a 6v generator and brackets. I haven't looked at coil, points, or condensor--- but thats the easy stuff. Thanks. For all those wondering why? I am one of these " I like it to be original ".

Dont need any excuses! Any reason is a good reason. I still believe in 6V systems.

Lots Of Luck!!!! I too beleve in "KISS" Keep It Stock Stupid" Your tractor will be much easier to work on forty years from now IF it is stock. . I do not have any help on your 861. But I wish you a lot of luck, maybe we will meet at some future show and can admire each others' tractors,or possabily our kids will be showing them. Merry Christmas Joe

You have a valid reason for going back to 6V. The only reason I"d do it would be if I was going to restore one back to original for shows.

I don"t claim to be an expert, but the first thing I"d do is evaluate the wiring. If the previous conversion made many changes, I"d buy a new harness. That alone will answer a bunch of questions and lead you in the right direction.

You will need a 6V voltage regulator. Your"s was probably removed since the 1-wire alternator has an internal regulator.

Remove any resistor that may have been added to the ignition to drop 12-volts down to 6-volts or, if the coil was switched to a 12-volt coil, you will need to get a new 6-volt coil.

Light bulbs: All will have to be replaced with 6-volt bulbs.

Battery: You will need a 6V battery and heavy gauge cables. Don"t forget to hook it up positive ground and you will have to polarize your new generator to get it charging once you get it all together. There are numerous how-to descriptions available.

Hope this helps. I"m sure several others will leap in here with their $0.02.

Is your coil still the original 6-Volt unit, with a resistor added for the 12-Volt conversion?

If so, remove the resistor, then connect the coil primary correctly for the system ground polarity you will be using.

If the coil has been changed to a 12-Volt "no external resistor needed" coil, you'll have to replave it with a correct 6-Volt replacement.

The points and condensor aren't concerned with what voltage you feed them, so no changes are needed there.

Don't forget to polarize the generator before the first start of the engine after the conversion. (Or should I say "correction"?)
