This may be a stupid question, but, do you not have to change the distributer and starter when converting the electrical system?

I am planning to convert my 8N to the 12 volt system but this seems a mystry to me.

Thank you for your answer. I did not read far enough down the forum, part of my questions were already answered. Electrically Challenged--that's me.

The square can is a mystery to me. Between the parts manual and looking at the 8N, I cannot find a voltage regulater or any square can.

I am about the fourth or fifth owner of this tractor, and it has not been well taken care of previously.

Jessie..... ...go out and look at yer distributor and count the sparkie nipples.

4-nipples, ya gottta frontmount distributor with a squarecan ignition coil clamped right on top of the distributor and only one-wire top terminal. And yer "infamous ballast resistor" is mounted on the backside of yer dash panel underneath yer ampmeter.

Iff'n yer tractor is frontmount 8N with 4-speed tranny, you'll have a 4-wire squarecan voltage regulator underneath yer oilpressure gauge. Iff'n yer frontmount is 9N/2N with 3-speed tranny, you'll have a 2-terminal roundcan cutt-outt relay underneath yer battery tray.

Iff'n yer distributor gotts 5-nipples, ya gottta 4-speed 8N with sidemount distributor with a roundcan sparkie coil bolted to the corner of the cylinderhead and NO RESISTOR. And you'll have a 4-wire squarecan voltage regulator underneath yer oilpressure gauge. Simple, eh?..... .....Dell

Jessie..... ...ah yes, 'nutter confuzed electrically challenged neubie. Just follow the kit instructions.

Starter don't care, 6 or 12v, positive or negative ground. Starter solenoid don't care. 12v alternator DEMANDS negative ground for its internal solidstate guttz. Ampmeter don't care 6 or 12v, pos or neg ground, but you care. Traditionally, ampmeter indicates (+) when charging the battery, change ampmeter leads. Headlites don't care pos or neg ground but headlites care about 12-volts. Change 'em or burn-out the 6-volt lites. Ignition switch don't care.

Distributor don't care, ignition points don't care, condenser don't care. IGNITION COIL CARES. 6-volt ignition coil needs special treatment to operate on 12-volts. (see yer kit instructions) or more better, use a real 12-volt ignition coil with NO RESISTORS. ..... ..respectfully, Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons

That said, I haven't found the right reasons for my eazy starting 6-volt 8N, and I know how to do it right, the first time. Infact, I know 8-ways to do it and they all work.

Jesse, the shop manuals says the front mount coil needs 3.8 Volts at the coil. Probably two resistors will be required. Ford started using 12 Volt in 1965 on the gas tractors with a resistor wire to the coil (except when starting) and the manual says 9.6 Volts at the coil(round Coil). I don't think this system was great, as most of the tractors were death on points and cond. I think you can buy a round coil with a resistor built in such as Cub Cadet used...Kelly.

The starter will be just fine, as will the distributor.

The ignition coil, however, will need to be changed and/or a resistor added to the primary circuit.

The exact procedure for that will vary, depending upon whether your's has a front-mount distributor with a "square" coil, or a side-mount distributor with a "round-can" coil.
