This past weekend I converted my 6v pos ground sidemount 8n to a 12v neg ground system. It starts and runs great, however, the ampmeter does not show charge. It is the single wire system. When I turn on the 12v lights, the ampmeter shows a discharge, which to me seems correct. I connected the single wire to the round bolt (I believe the bat terminal) on the back of the alternator to the positive side of the ampmeter. When revved up, no change on ampmeter. Do I need to re-excite the alternator? Any help would be appreciated? Also, thanks for all of the great info on this site.

Erik I set mine up with an delco alternator out of an old GM pick up (more than one wire). I also have a resistor in line and I also have a light that goes off when the alt starts to charge. I recieved most of this info from my neighbor that has his own auto electric business. I also have wire diagrams if you need more help. My system runs like a dream. Put a switch in line to turn your batery off.

Erik, here`s how mine`s wired, alt batt post to negative side of ammeter , pos ammeter to solenoid. Your 1 wire alt has to be exited every time you start-up. Maybe 1800 rpm,( I think).
Also, if you dont use your tractor regularly, put a toggle switch in the wire - Alter to solenoid - or your alter will kill you battery.
If you use it regularly no need for toggle.

Thats one of the problems with a one wire alternator. The RPMs need to get it to start chargeing can be more then the RPM of an 8N engine.
