My N is a 6 volt but I have some neighbors that have a 9 and 8 N with 12 volts and from what they have told me a car battery will not hold up very well to the pounding these tractors can take on the farm. Be sure you buy a real tractor battery. I've heard (pardon my french) that John Deere makes a very good battery.

Don't know where you get your info from but I have been useing car/truck batterys in my tractors for more then 20 years and they last just as long in my tractors as they do in my cars/trucks. Plus in my area you have to order them or drive 40 miles to find a tractor battery.

Yep have to agree with joe. Had a 12 volt car battery on my tractor and came out one morning to find acid spilled everywhere. Got a picture laying around somewhere I'll post if'n i can find it.

Well I can tell you from experiance that auto batteries don't hold up to well. I had one split open after about 3 mos. Got it warrentied and the next one started cracking at a seam after a month or two. took it back an when i told em I was putting it in a tractor they didn't want to service the warranty. Now that said I use my N extensively on my 25 acres. Gets a good workout about 8 months out of the year. Maybe if you have one for fun or show it won't really matter but if your going to do real work then get a real battery.

Don't know what your doing wrong but I've never had any problems. By the way all my tractors are work tractors, some look better then others but all work. My main line tractor has had nothing but car batterys in it since 1980 when I got it. It has been used to load dump trucks with gravel 8 to 10 hours a day at times. Been used to bale hay, rake hay, mow hay etc. Never ever had any problems. But I also don't buy the cheap batterys like interstate.

what old said. also, if you're going to replace using the manual method, you might also pay attention to the pos/neg post locations. as most batteries can be had with pos and neg either way.

The biggest/highest cold crank amp battery that will fit in the box. What I do whne getting a new battery for a tractor is measure the battery box and then make sure I take the tape measure with me when I go look for batterys.
