Cleaning up a nasty previous 12 volt conversion. Decided to go with a 12 volt coil. Do the 12 volt coils still need an external resistor or are they equipped with an internal resistor?

Yes. To limit the current through the coil. Otherwise you will ruin it. See the post below for details on which resistor to use.

Radio Shack #271-13-1-- 1 ohm wirewound resistors 10 watt ....2 come in a pack, Wire them side by side--parallel..
