I am converting my early 8N (front mount dist.) to 12 volts. I am putting a dropping resistor, in line, to the 6 volt coil.
My problem is : when I check the voltage out of the resistor, it reads the same voltage as when it went into the resistor (12.2volts).
I"m no elecrician, but it seems to me that the voltage should have dropped to around 6 volts.
I have used 3 different resistors, two from NAPA and one from my New Holland dealer and get the same reading from all. My dealer also told me the voltage should drop after the resistor. What Gives? Any help would be appreciated! I hate changing points in those front mount distributors!

Measure it with the tractor running and you will see a drop at the distributor side of the resistor. If there is no current through the resistor there will be no voltage drop, which is why you are seeing the reading you are.

Yep it will read that with no load on it but put a load on it and then it drops the voltage. I'E. points are open
