12 volt NAPA coil problems

Well, I installed the Napa coil on the Mutt (8N side dist engine in 9N)to complete the 12 volt rewiring. She fired right up, and then when the alternator kicked in, the engine would bog down for a second, then smooth out. After letting it run for a couple minutes, it started missing like crazy. Tried adjusting the timing, but nothing seemed to take the miss out of the engine. After two days of trying to figure it out, I bought a ballast resistor and used the old 12 volt coil (never heard of the make, and don't remember it right now). After that, the Mutt fired right up and idled like a sewing machine. Am I to assume that the Napa coil is bad (only a couple days old), or do I have some other problem? I pulled the dist. cap to look at the points (also new), and they showed a little white build-up (don't know what it was). Maybe the 12 volt cooked those points? I would like to use a true 12 volt coil, but I am tempted to leave it alone now that it is running good. Any advice? Dell, I know you have the answers to this one.
Thanks.

"After two days of trying to figure it out, I bought a ballast resistor and used the old 12 volt coil"....

I assume you mean a 6-Volt coil with a converting resistor?

As far as the NAPA coil, a coil can be bad out of the box, just like anything else. I had a Standard Ignition coil that wouldn't spark right out of the box, back a couple of years.

Hooked it up to our SUN coil tester, yup, dead.

After shaking it around a bit, it tested good, shook it around some more, dead again, so bad parts right out of the box DO happen!

Bob,
The coil that was on the tractor (it was already converted to 12 volt, but a slice job) when I got it was a 12 volt coil, but it said it must be used with an external resistor. Looks like a regular 12 volt coil (round can), just shorter. I followed the advice I got on here and bought the NAPA coil, but apparently I got a bad one. I will be dang sure that I have them test the next coil I buy before I leave the store. Thanks everyone for the help.

Bad week for coils. the 'standard' coil on my 660 died a few days ago.. blew oil charge out the top! spark went orange.

Not uncommon to get a bad part right out of the box. If its a true 12 volt coil I'd guess you just got one of the bad ones. Any time now days I buy a starter or alternator I have them test it before I walk out the door. Seen something like 30-50% of them bad right out of the box.
