Ok, I got my kit, but I have a couple questions. (Front-mount dist 8n)

Unfortunately, I found the instructions to be less than fully helpful, and although there"s plenty of info in the archives, I haven"t found anything that directly relates to my issues yet. So here goes, please bear with me.

#1 - The new coil is slightly shorter in vertical height than the old, and the retaining clip doesn"t secure the new coil, even with the gasket that was on the old one. Do people find they have to bend this clip, or modify something in some other way?

#2 - Alternator Bracket - 2 parter
#2a - The two U"s welded together - I had to bend it slightly to get it to fit where the generator had been, but even then, the bolt hole sits too high and I can"t mount it. Is this normal, am I doing something wrong, or did I get a bad piece. The two sets of bolt holes are different sizes, so it seems clear which way it has to go... but it doesn"t go.
#2b - The other two pieces - clearly the one with the slot is the adjustable one that attaches to the top of the Alt. it looks like the other piece, with the 90* bend mounts to the head bolts, but that would mean it will hit the wiring loom, which is non-flexible metal, is this right? Is there a modification required here?

I"m really sorry if these have been asked 100 times before, but I could really use the help, Thanks a bunch in advance!

Ed,
From your discription you dont have the same hardware that Rod shows a pic of. I just did this conversion a while back and had the exact same problems. the 2 "U" brackets welded together were
not offset enough to place the alt. pully inline with the crank pully. I had to grind off the weld and reweld (I think about 3/8" offset)
I also had an issue with the long L bracket I dont remember exactly the fix, but it boils
down to (you are going to have to do some fabrication adjustments)I dont know where they make these parts but I think they have a plus or minus tolerance of about 6" :-( As for the coil: I have not had that problem
I'd try the tube trick & bend the bail.
Good Luck, let us know how it goes
Dan

Cut a piece of innertube and tuck between the coil and bail if the bail is still a tad loose after you adjust it like Rob said.

The wire bale that secures the coil may be bent. Remove the coil and then the bale. Inspect the holes in the distributor for damage or junk shoved up inside. See to it that the ends of the bale are bent to 90* and resinsert the ends of the bale into the distributor. Set the gasket and coil on the distributor and move the bale up the front of the coil and back across the top to snap in place and secure. Long shot, but you may have the alternator brackets for the 8N left side. Check the paperwork.

Thanks for the responses,

as to
#1 Ok, bending the bail seems like a reasonable solution.

#2a - Dan, yes mine doesn"t match Rob"s great diagram, I purposely haven"t said whose kit I have because I did call them and they"re looking into sending me another bracket, I"ll see if that one works before I say anything unecessarily negative on record. :)

#2b - On the upper piece with the 90* bend, Dan, do you remember doing any cutting or modification of the wiring loom tube?

Mine did'nt have a wire loom on it when I did the conversion. I have sence picked one up and plan on putting it on. (with all my free time :-)
I have not got to it yet. but I would try and NOT mod. the tube because it is a OEM and the bracket is not. I would try to mod the bracet somehow.
maybe use a different head bolt.
BTW: I'm with you on the not slamming a piticular outfit but people need to know that these kits dont just fall on when you get them. there is some think'n involved and a little fabrication knowhow is a help. did you also go with electronic ignition? I did with mine. this thing starts better than my truck or my vette.
I went out the other day to show a friend; I hit the key and it started so fast i couldnt let go of the key fast enough. this after sitting for 2 months.
The roads gettin bad. It'll get a workout soon. :-) Be safe
Dan

Make sure you tell them you have a front-mount and that you want to mount that armature on the right side.

Everyonce in awhile guys post they have problems with parts from a source but rarely say what source. Not much useful information in that.
