12V Square Can Problem

My 8N has a 12v conversion with neg ground and front mount distributor that runs great for 30 min to an hour then backfires and quits. Next day, it fires right up and gives a repeat performance. Thanks to the bunches of information and help on these discussions that I went back and read, I"m 99% sure the problem is the square can coil. I had already replaced the points and 8-32x3/16 screws and checked the gap each time it quit (steady at .015) and put in a carb kit and installed a heavy duty ignition switch.

The replacement 12v coil I found locally has a single terminal on its top. My old conversion coil has 2 terminals - one on top and one on the front. A small round coil mounted on the engine block sends a spark plug type wire to the front terminal on the square can and a small (16 ga?) wire from its front post to the top terminal on the square can. A ballast resistor before the round coil sends a wire to its rear post.

I don"t know what I need to do or change to get it right and would sure appreciate any help or suggestions. I hope I"ve given enough info without being too long-winded. Thank you Ned

Thanks Bob, Soundguy, Danny and Ron for your input. Work has kept me busy and from responding, but it looks like my plan now is to replace the round coil with a 1C14SB 12v round coil from NAPA, eliminate the ballast resistor, and keep everything wired to the same square can just as it was. Does that sound right? I'm good at turning the screw driver once I've got the plan but my mechanic-ing doesn't go a lot higher than that. Thanks Ned

Since you already have the dummy passthru coil available.. i'd get a napa IC14SB round TRUE 12v coil, and wire it up like it had been.. MINUS the resistor. the napa coil will not need the oem ballast resistor, or an add on resistor.

You may be running both ballast resistor, and an extra resistor and killing your high voltage.. etc.

I am not sure if the resistors are neccisary or not. I changed my 8N to 12 volt. used a 12 volt square can coil with 2.5 ohms resistance and wired direct from ignition switch to top of coil. Put over 10 hours on it so far with no problem.

Bob.. that 2.5 ohm 12v coil still needs about an additional half ohm of resistance in line with it for long points life. As it is.. using a static 12v figure.. that is 4.8 amps.. using 14.4v a normal alternator voltage.. that 5.76 amps going thru those points assuming no resistors.

You really need that extra half ohm of resistance in there.

Thank you, I will look into getting one. I had asked before and was told it was ok without resistor but if it will save the points I'll go for it.

A true 12v round can coil would be fine without a resistor... however.. the 12v front mount coils I've seen .. like the tisco style ones.. still benefit from some extra primary resistance.

2.8-3.2 ohms seems to be the most common primary resistance setup when you look at the ignition resistor/coil online charts.. etc.

Ned,

Your square can coil is now nothing more than a pass through. Someone has modified it to be used with an external round can coil. You have basically 2 options: use a new 12 volt square coil or replace the existing round coil. If you use a new square coil, you will probably have some wiring to correct.

Good luck,
Danny

My 9n has a frontmounted squarecan 12v coil, and it has only one terminal on top that receives its power thru two resisters. The original ballast resister and another wire wound ceramic resister (part#8NE10306)installed inseries with the ballast resister. The oldtimer that I got the coil from said I needed the extra resister to insure that the coil did not receive too much current from the battery. Installed them both and it's been a start on the first turn every since. JMHO...Ron
