12V Coil Question on Jubilee

My Jubilee was converted to 12V when I got it. Having some spark problems and want to change the coil. It's so old can't see much on it, other than 12V.

Do I need to buy any particular 12V Coil for replacement? Just want to know what to ask for when I go to the parts counter. Also, going to replace the ignition switch. Currently it has a toggle switch and the wires are attached with screws.

Should I replace with a particular switch for best fire?

For that 12v coil you need to know if you have a resistor or resister wire with it. "External" or "internal" resister for the coil. You probably, almost for sure, don"t have a resistor or resister wire but that"s what you need to know. After that, it"s physical size so it mounts ok. If the auto parts guys get glassy-eyed and thick you can go to the starter/generator/alternator shop and have an informed conversation to get what you need. They can probably test and tell you if you have an internal or external resistance coil; not sure about that.
The switch just needs to physically fit and there"s nothing about "best fire." Bet a good starter shop has your switch too.

A new toggle switch will work ok.. some prefer waterproff 'marine' style switches.. or a oem ford ignition style switch will work.. your choice.

if you do indeed have a working 12v system, a good side mount coil is a napa IC14SB it's about 15$ or so... works great.

No resistors needed.

Thanks. I'll try to get the NAPA coil referenced. It is a 12V, no external resistor currently. Thanks again.

My NAA and IH CUB are both currently using that coil.. have been for a couple years.. Works great, and has plenty of sparkies stored inside!

Well I installed the new NAPA coil and ignition switch yesterday, but I still have a problem. In addition to the new switch and coil, I now have a new (rebuilt) distributor with new points (set correctly), condensor, cap, rotor button, plug wires, plugs, ground cable and battery cable and new wiring in between coil, switch, etc.
She cranks great and when first running takes the gas pretty well (with a little stumbling). But in no time, at anything above about 1/4 - 1/3 throttle she stumbles and misses in a big way. Oh yeah, I boiled out the carb and put in a kit and adjusted. I noticed that the small screw (air/fuel idle adjustment I believe) seems to have little or no effect when you turn it in or out. So, I took the carb back apart to ensure that all orfices/passages are clean and open and they appear to be. Open to suggestions, I'm about out of ideas. . . .

I believe the small screw is in to enrich .. and is idle mix.. and only effects it at very low idle.

Hows the spark look?

When it stumbles.. does it smoke black? any gas pouring out of carb?

timing retarded?

When it stumbles/misses it does put a little black smoke. Also black smokes if you give it a lot of throttle at once. (Tried getting that out with the main carb adjustment, but no improvement.) Sparks seems good. Everything on the ignition side is new and adjusted. I have tried adjusting the timing at idle with the same problem whether advanced or retarded (worse when too far retarded). Starting to wonder if I have a bent push rod or something else wrong under the valve cover.

Hmm.. sounds way to rich.. or possibly it is trying to flood out...Float adjusted properly?

Zane , a few posts back, had mentioned a problem with some MS carbs with the bowl vent.

I read Zane's post . . . wouldn't a blocked vent cause fuel starve rather starve?

That starve my make a good choke like effect..sucking in gobs of fuel.. making it stumble.. then run rich.

Hard to say though.

You got it fireing on all plugs... got fire order right?

Got the firing order correct and firing on all. I might try pulling the main adjustment needle completely out and see if that gives it air and improves anything. I doubt it will, but if so, might validate a carb vent problem.

Float is adjusted at 1/4" and not flooding out of the carb. I will look for Zanes post on the bowl vent. Thanks.
