On my 12-volt 9N, when I push the starter switch I hear a sizzling sound at the battery. It was working fine five minutes earlier. After I disconnected the positive cable from the battery, and with the key off, I checked several things with the ohmmeter...the positive post on the starter was grounded, the post on the coil was grounded. Those shouldnt be to ground, should they???

Thanks Rob....that was it. Cleaned the cables and put them on extremely tight and the tractor started. Had them off several times yesterday but never really cleaned them and such. thanks!

The sizzling sound, like Rob says, is a bad connection. It could be betwen the one of the posts and the battery cable end attached to it, or inside the battery cable end itself, due to corrosion between the cable end and the wires inside. It is even possible for a connection INSIDE the battery to fail. Start by cleaning and tightening both cables, which will most likely clear up the problem.

While working around the battery, even more so here, wear appropriate safety googles, in case there is a battery explosion, which is certainly possible when you have arcing right at the battery connections!

Those posts aren"t grounded but it looks like it on most ohmmeters. The ohmmeters can"t read the low resistance. Try again and closely watch the meter and you will likely see the needle move. Carefully zero the meter first of course. Rotate the engine and that coil post will open up because the distributor points open. You heard a sizzle, most likely a crappy battery cable connection. Maybe the tractor end of the ground strap but I"d look that the battery post. Hook it up and look and listen, you"ll find it. You might feel it"s the warm post. Take both of them off at both ends and clean them up and you"ll probably be done with the sizzle.
You"ll do better troubleshooting if you stick with voltage measurements. That will get it done quick and effective. Test light is handier than an ohmmeter. Ohms are just too small.
