converted bessie to 12v neg. ground today...it was either spend mucho dollaro on repairing the 6 volt system or add a few more and get 12v electronic
so I opted for the 12v. man does she staart now,I can't get my finger off the button fast enough. the hardest part about doing the conversion was finding a place to mount the coil, ended up by the oil filter, works great there. the first time I hit the starter it started right up but could tell the timing was off so I kept playing with the breaker plate(or is that now the magnetic pick-up coil plate?) adjustment untill she sounded good. took her for a few laps around the yard and wow does she run good now, governor kicking just right no smoke man am I grinnin' the Cheshire cat would surely be jealous. All I need to do now is get the charging system working, has anyone ever used an old ford generator and regulater, say from a early 70's car ??? just curious as to why everyone uses alt. I just had to tell someone thanks for listening. P.S. Why didn't my starter run backwards???

The only starters that run backwards with a change of polarity are PERAMANENT MAGNET FIELD starters, which are rare except on snall air cooled engines and a few newer automotive applications.

Like Dell says, alternators are cheap and easy to install. Any Ford generator with matched regulator between 1956, first year Ford went to 12v, and 1964 when alternators were on most Ford street products will work. ray

Breezie..... ...starter don't care positive or negative ground, all turn the same direction.

The reason the Delco 10SI is so popular, its cheap and has BUILT-IN solidstate voltage regulator. And is much more efficient.

A "stealth" 12v genny requires a matching squarecan voltage regulator, while possible, they are NOT common. Use the Delco alterator..... ....Dell, a 12v advocate for the right reason
