Howdy All,

Well after tinkering around with my 49 8N this weekend , in single digit temps, I think I am in need of a new Battery.

Backgound info:

1949 8N converted to 12 volts. My tractor will not start unless I have my battery charger hooked to it. I can put my automatic charger on the battery overnight and it will read fully charged. It even reads 12.4 volts when its done charging. If I crank the engine the starter turns noticeably slower without the aid of the battery charger connected. I checked the water in the cells and they were low. I probably added half a quart of water in total to all the cells. The battery is about 5 years old. Do I have weak battery? It will crank the engine over and fire it right up in the warmer months.

Thanks

Hec

If you have a wally world close by the everstart battery's they sell are tough.we've changed every thing on the farm to those and they hold up well. They have 3 year "free" replacement and I think 60 month after that for what you use after that.We have probily 50 or so on farm and replaced one for free in last 3 years burn it out some how on power unit.15 tractors,7 cotton pickers,25 power units not all have batterys and numerous trucks.Just my opinion..Dave.

1/2 quart low and 5 years old.. and is only at 12.4 fully charged.. I'd say it is time to send it to the big battery recycling plant in the sky.

A fully charged battery.. just of fthe charger should show a tad higher.. and not die off as soon as you load it.

I'll bet if you used a hygrometer in each cell.. one is noticeably less than the others.

A 12v battery should kick the starter all by it's lonesome.. no jump needed.

Did you mean hygrometer?? Or did you mean hydrometer? One measures moisture in the air....the other specific gravity. At the risk of sounding like a smart tookus....i think you meant hydrometer. I am like sooooo glad I never make any mistakes!! hehehe....

Soundguy,

That battery without the charger connected will produce about 7-8 revolutions of the engine in about 5 seconds. If that makes sense. All the while I have the clutch in. What battery would you recommend a size #22 or #35? What's the difference?

Hec..... ..one of the charistics of "bad battery" is they will charge but any load (read starter) will suck'em right down. You've gotta BAD BATTERY, quit being willie-washie about it. Eather size #22 or #35 will fit and work. While automobile batterys will work, recommend a battery made for "tractor duty". Automobile battery gutts won't take the off-road bouncing that a tractor gives the battery..... ....Dell

Dell,

Well, I guess I will have to bite the bullet and go and buy a new Batt. I will get one rated for Tractor Duty. Now that you mentioned it the one I got now is a car battery. Hmmmm.

Thanks again

Hec

Bob,

Alright, Alright! I guess I am cheap. I guess I can't complain since the battery did last 5 years.

Complaining isn't necessarily a bad thing. If'n it was a 60 month battery....fine....you got 60 months out of it. But if'n it was a 72 month battery then you got shorted a year....and I'd complain too! If nobody ever complained..think they would ever develop a "bigger, better" battery? Batteries just naturally make things....well...uh....cranky!!!
