I changed our 1941 9n to 12 volt. when i finished the converion it started right up ran for a few minutes and then quit. I found the points were burnt, so i changed them,no luck, then changed the condenser and coil. still no luck. i am not getting any spark. I do have power to the coil. I did notice that the spring end of the coil looks like it is burnt. When I changed it to 12 volt I used the same ceramic resister and diode, that i used when we changed 2 of our allis"es to 12 volt, i did not have any problem with them. it is a WELLS F795 ceramic resister. could this be my problem. Thanks for your help. I know the snow will be coming and this is our plowing tractor.

Dell, The wells ceramic resister is to drop the voltage to 6v. we have used it in 2 of our allis. I currantly have the original resister out of the circuit. All of the wiring diagrams show using a RU 100 votage reducer. I may have missed something in reading the diagram. I will have to try putting it back in the circuit.or find a 12volt coil and use your trick. Thanks

This Ford 6 Volt coil is designed to run at less Volts than the Allis 6 Volt coil.

The 6 Volt Ford coil needs the original ballast resistor PLUS the "6-to-12 Volt converting resistor" to live on a 12 Volt system.

Furthermore, a resistor does not just automatically drop 12 Volts to 6 Volts.

The voltage dropped by the resistor you used is dependant upon the current flowing through the resistor. There may be a enough difference in the current draw between the Allis and Ford systems to affect the voltage dropped across your resistor, and that will result in a different voltage being sent to the coil.

Mark..... ....donnno nuttin about Allis but the conversion to 12v for the squarecan frontmount 9N is full of danger for the electrically challenged. Your description has all the indications of OVER-VOLTS, burned points, burned coil springy thingy

Iff'n the Wells resisitor is a 12 to 6 volt converting resistor, You ALSO NEED the "infamous ballest reistor" connected in series like flashlight batteries. Without the ballast resistor you are OVER-VOLTing the squarecan 6v frontmount ignition coil and may have permanently damaged your OEM 6v coil.

The "infamous ballast resistor is mounted on a "T" bracket on the backside of your dashpanel underneath your ammeter..... ....Dell

At this point, it might be best to replace the coil with a 12 Volt unit and eliminate ALL resistors you now have, and install "Dell's trick current limiting resistor" to limit current to the coil and points.

I had called the local ford tractor dealership and asked if the had a 12v. coil for a 9n and they told me no.Is Dell"s set up put in line to the coil? I have been looking in the archives and reading a lot of posts from Dell. I will have to look on this site for a 12 v.coil.
