12V conversion starter??

Okay, I understand the 12V conversion to a point. My understanding of DC motors is that if you reverse the polarity they run the opposite direction. Do I have to do anything with the 6 Volt starter to get the engine to turn the right direction and what impact does the 12 volts have on starter life?

thanks,
al

Thanks guys. I"ll probably leave it at 6 volts since it starts fine right now. I figured the 12 volt conversion would give me a better chance of starting in cold weather.

Thanks again,
Al ("48 8N)

Due to the way the field's wound, the motor spins the same direction reguardless of polarity.

12v makes a 6v starter spin faster. That's generally the whole point for a 12v conversion.. faster starter rpm's bandaid a worn out engine.

If you grind on it endlessly, you will damage the starter. Also some ancedotal evidence that the bendix gets a lot more abuse from the much faster/harder draw in.

If I wer converting to 12v Id keep my 6v starter till it otherwise needed replacing.. and only then have it rebuilt. That's what I did with my NAA.. it was 12v when i got it.. had been for years.. had a shot 6v starter on it that you had to tap with your boot to make it start.. eventually that gave out ( last month ) and I had it rebuilt 12v. The brush holders were burnt right off.. just wear and age...

In a starter motors when you reverse the polarity you reverse it in both the field coil and in the rotor, so the reversal in each cancel and you get the same rotation. If the rotor were a small permanent magnet as in many small DC motors reversing polarity would reverse the rotation.

As long as you don't run the starter motor for extended periods on 12 volts, allowing heat to build up, the starter will be just fine. I wouldn't run it for extended periods on 6 volts either.

HI Al,

There are several different types of DC motors just like there are several types of AC motors. I don't think your starter motor changes direction of rotation with a change in polarity. Your starter motor recognizes a hot and a ground whether positive ground or negative ground.

Maybe someone else will have a more technical explanation.

Best regards,

Rick H. Ga.
