Okay, I got the girl.... blonde hair (real), blue eyes (sparkling) and 36D's (also real!)... the bonus is she came with a 8N. The problem is the dang thing never wants to start. It's still a 6 volt and I've done the usual change to bigger wires, change the coil, etc. and it still doesn't wanna start. I'm thinking of switching it over to 12 volt. I have an Allis C that's 12 volt and never fails to start. Here's my questions... where do I find the serial number on her (the tractor, I've got the girl covered!) and where is the best place to buy the conversion kit. Thanks for the help.... getting the thing running will make me a hero!

I agree with the others.. do lots of checks and tests first.. before converting.

What does the spark look like? Are you using copper core wires? Correct plugs?

If a front mount unit.. do you have the correct ballast resistor in line?

Voltage at the top of the front mount coil wil be 3-3.5 volts points closed. and batt volts points open. On the side mount coil you will get 0v points closed and batt volts points open.

When's the last time you serviced your points?

The problem is lack of info. Converting to 12v will only mask the real problem temporally. Do a wet & dry compression test, post the numbers along with location of the distributor. Then state what is happening. (No start, plugs are wet.) (No start, plugs are dry.) (Good or no good flow of fuel for a few minutes when the carb drain plug is removed.) You can be the hero, but don't do a conversion. Leave her a female. Or were you talking about the tractor?

hey Ernie..... ...the engine s/n is LIGHTLY HANDSTAMPED on a flat 1x4 boss, just under the cylinder headgasket and aft of the oilfilter canister. S/N's are listed on the left sidebar under "Research & Info".

Before you change the battery; make certain yer not fightin' a neardead engine by checking its compression ratios. Ford specs: 90psi min (dry). 5 puffs and ritter down. Then add a squirt of oil (1oz) down the sparkie hole to seal the rings and take 'nutter' compression reading (WET) and writter down.

Good engine will increase compression about +10psi wet; worn engine about +20psi wet; canidate for overhaul +30psi wet; no increase, burned exhaust valve.

Yesterdays Tractors, sponsor of this great N-Board sells 12 volt conversion kits..... ....respectfully, Dell a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons

That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6 volt 52 8N, and I know how to do it right the 1st-time, infact I know 7-ways to do it.
