I am still working on getting the charging system on my tractor to work. Took the alternator off to have it bench tested and found out it was bad, so I replaced it. I am attempting to trace all the wires to see what is what, but it is harder then you might think. The previous owner had wired in lights, a lighter, a horn and turn signals. In addition to that, there seem to be several wires that don't go to anything anymore. I want to get the charging problem taken care of before I try to remove anything.

Now the question: It looks like one of the wires from the alternator is hooked up to the horn. I think I read in one of the past post something about a way to wire the alternator to the horn as a way to start the alternator charging. Is that correct and if it is, do you just have to press the horn button once or what? Is this a recommended way to have it wired, or is it better to use a diode?

Thanks

PS: I thought this was a one wire alternator, because there was only one wire hooked up to the alternator, with a second wire hanging loose in the harness, but when I removed the alternator, I discovered two wire hook-ups hiding at the top of alternator under the hood.

You wouldn't actually have a horn in the circuit we had been describing.. however many people DO use a momentary push button.. Like a horn button, as a switch just to excite the alternator..

On the gm 10-si 3 wire jobs.. you will have the big batt stud, and p1, and p2
P1 is the switched or isolated excite.. It can be tied to a diode and then to a positive switched source.. like the switched side of the ignition switch. If you hook the diode up backwards.. the alternator merely does not excite. Alternately you can hook up a momentary switch from positive to theis wire.. hitting the switch while the tractor is about 500rpms or more will make it start charging. Another method is to hook this wire to a trailer marker light and then again tot he switched ignition wire.. the light keeps the alternator from backfeeding enough voltage to power the ignition. I prefer the switched excite for the bulletproof ease of troubleshooting.. however the diode is more 'elegant'.. and the marker light scheme is WIDELY used. ( even gm uses it... 'idiot' light ).

P2 is the sense line.. and you jumper it right down to the big charge stud which then goes to a suitable positive connection.. like the hot side of the starter switch on a 9/2n or the hot side of the starter solenoid on an 8n or newer model.

I recomend a new wire harness if yours is messed up too.

Nseries . com has a fairly decent 12v wire diagram.. except we generally don't run the headlights off the ignition circuit.. we give them their own switch and wiring.. etc.

ask questions if you need more info.

good luck

Thanks.

I too have a large collection of saved messages. Especially crossover part numbers, etc.

Some of the questions we see alot.. like what resistor to use.. etc.. I've actually typed up a good long response.. and saved it.. much like I believe Zane does with his excelent hydraulic troubleshooting post.. then I just paste it in as a response to a question.. etc.
