12 V Battery Removal

I got a 52 Ford 8N side mount dist. from a guy who decided it would be fine to put in a 12 volt battery. He said it started up fine, ran o.k., and charged the battery.

I think he's nuts. A recently purchased 6 V will go back into the battery box along with some new points.

My question is what parts of the electrical system should I replace? What effect could occur if someone just tossed a 12 v into a 6 v system.

Thanks!
Ron

Ron..... ...what arn't you telling us? While you can re-convert to 6 volts, it isn't a job for the electrically challenged neubie shadetree tractor mechanic.

And iff'n yer re-converting for "originality purposes", ya gotts some homework to do.

Ya claim "it charges". Welp, eather its gotts a "stealth" 12 volt genny and matching squarecan voltage regulator over the oilpressure gauge. ...OR... its gotts the commonally used popular Delco 10-SI alternator with built-in voltage regulator.

And iff'n you insist on re-converting to 6 volts, you will need a real 3-wire 6-volt genny witha 4-wire squarecan voltage regulator and 6 volt ignition coil and 6 volt headlights. And a WORKING AQUAINTANCE with the electrical diagram in the I&T FO-4 manual. Gittchur pencil out and figger out whatzitt gonnna cost ya. (besides loosing that zippy 12-volt starter effect)..... ..Dell, a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons

That said, I still haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6 volt 8N. And I know how to do it right; the first time.

Sorry if I was not explaining it very well, Dell.

From what I was told, he did not convert the tractor over to 12 volts at all. It was my understanding that he just put a 12 v battery in the box.

The 12 volt battery that I removed was ground on the positive side, like the 6 v battery should be.

Maybe I am mistaken, but it looks like a 6 v. set-up with a 12 v battery. Is it possible for it to run like that for a little while?

thanks.

Ron..... ...a 12 volt battery with NO CHARGING?

Your N-Tractor doesn't use much electricity and can actually live onnna battery for many hours of operation, before you haffta recharge it in the garage from 110 house volts. Meantime, you have the "advantage" of faster 12 volt starting and hotter sparkies (until the coil and points burn out). And hope you don't haffta turn on your 6 volt headlights 'cuz 12 volts will mak'em go pooff!!! and let all the dark suckers out.

I use a marine deepcycle 12 volt battery for my NewZealand portable electric fence charger to protect my sheep and to control their grazing. Lasts for about 3 weeks before I haffta re-charge.

Hope this helps you figger out what is going on. Many people convert to 12 volts for faster starter cranking and quicker starting. Often 12 volt conversion is a bandaide for tired engine. How to tell iff'n ya gotts a tired engine? Do the dreaded compression test, Ford specs: 90 psi min (dry) Others are just too cheap to repair their 6 volt genny..... ...Dell

Dell.. do you have a solar 12v charger on your battery powered fencer? I see that harbor freight often has 12v chargers on sale for 9.99 I use them to maintin my 12v tractor when it sits over the winter.

Not the best means of charge.. but might get you a few more days or a week before you have to recharge that deep cycle..

By the way.. I added my ducklings yesterday to their new outside pen. The absolutely loved the 3 gallon duck jacuzzi I installed for them..

Thanks for the suggestions, Dell.

Yes, the battery is probably not charging... I said in the first post that he told me it was, but i am sure it was just him talking out of his you-know-what.. I will put a tester on it tomorrow to check it out for sure. But before I cranked it up again, I wanted to go ahead and replace anything that might have gotten burned out, weakened or affected.

I did crank it for a few min. after putting in the 6 v. and it started... the ammeter did not move. There is a loader on the tractor and the headlights are on the loader itself. They are not currently hooked up.

I did do a compression test before i purchased the tractor. The results were between 100 to 110 psi for all four cyl. That was a dry test and my thinking was with that high of a reading dry, there was no need for a wet test.

I have the I&T shop service manual and will read more about the wiring, but I just wanted to know what electrical parts would survive from a 12 v battery being placed in the tractor... I prob. will need a new voltage reg. as well, huh?

thanks for taking time to help me out!

He may have just dropped in a 12v battery he had laying around just to sell the tractor. If you started it with the 6v battery you are good to go. Just go to the "Archives" on this Board to read how to polorize your system when replacing charger circuit parts.

My tractor was the same way, except I bought a bunch of 12v stuff for it before I realized there was a mismatch. I am getting a 12v generator through another N-forum member Jim Cox. I just put the new 12v Voltage regulator on today.
Your system should be ok to switch back to 6v just by putting in a new battery if nothing else is changed.
I'd put a multi-meter on your battery and generator, etc to find out just how and if it's charging before changing anything though.
