12 volt Alternator.. Which way does it turn.

I installed the Genesee Products 12 volt system with the 12 volt 3 wire Alternator. I notice today that it turns clockwise, but the cooling fins behind the pully are designed to turn counter-clockwise.
Now this is a front mount set-up, so the alternator is on the right front side.
Did the Delco-Remy alternator turn counter-clockwise on the Chev.?

Your Delco alternator does not care which way it turns. It will charge the same in either direction. However, unless Locktited on, the nut would unscrew if it were turning backward, and the pulley would fall off!

Your fan is most likely correct for the standard rotation your alternator is turning. The fan throws the air outward, with it's backslanted blades, and air enters the REAR of the alternator to replace what's thrown out the front.

correct on the air flow, but automotive brush holders ( Delco type 110 ) are the only ones that can rotate either direction. The heaviner Type 116 are designed for proper wear turning CW only, but I doubt Genesee would spend the extra cash to do it that way, but who knows, perhaps they could prove me wrong by going the extra mile. I've been inside a few Tisco alternators ( like the ones in the popular 12V conversion kits ) and in the most polite terms possible: NO THANKS

good luck

Mount it.
It will turn the proper direction.
Looking at it from the front it will turn clockwise.

Skeeter..... ....giggle, (sorry), the N-Engine and all most ALL gasoline engines turn ClockWize when looked at the front of the engine ...BUT... amazingly enuff, when that same engine is looked at the aftend of the engine, that d*mn engine is turning CounterClockWize.

So the answer to your question is, the alternator turns ClockWize like the waterpump and crankshaft pulley when looked at the alternators pulley. Therefore your alternator cooling fanblades on backend of alternator will be turning ...are you ready for this?... CounterClockWize. And that works the same wheather on the left side of the engine or the right side of the engine.

Now don't ask me how they got all those various engine manufacturers to agree engines should turn ClockWize, but it happened.

Howsomevers, there are SPECIAL marine engines that do turn counterclockwize for dual engine dual prop installations for dockside manuverablility. P-38 Fighter was also known for counter rotating props, kept the airplane rightside-up without haveing BIG-DRAG inducing tailfeathers.

Now IDLER PULLEYS that press from OUTSIDE the fanbelt loop will turn CounterClockWize..... ..Dell

Thanks for the information on the rotation.
Standing in front of the tractor the fan and crank turns clockwise, and it should to run.
But the fins on the alternator looks like it was made to turn counter-clockwise.

Anyway the tractor is running great and starts on the first turn of the starter. I now can put the tractor in 4th gear, and at idle speed the tractor will move when I release the clutch, and will not die.
