12 volt or 6 volt coil, how can I tell?

I have a new 12 volt conversion kit "tisco " brand. the coil has a sticker on it that says 12v but the wiring diagram shows connecting both the new and the original resistors in series. in doing much research on as many "dell" posts as I could the info says to use only the new resistor and not both with a 12v coil. when I put a digital meter on both old 6v coils I have they read 1.2 ohms. when I put the meter on the new coil it shows a change but only to about 2.5 ohms. I was thinking it should read more like 4 or 5 ohms if it was a 12v coil. do I have annother 6v coil and need to connect both resistors as the wiring diagram says or should I use only the one new resistor. I guess I could just use my old 6v coil and both resistors just to be sure but would rather use the new parts.

JPF,

Been there done that. Please check my old post regarding this topic. Some of the guys didn't believe my findings but you have the proof. THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS!

JPF..... .....yer the first person to post new 12 volt frontmount coil resistances with even enuff savvy to ask an intellegent question.

1.2 ohms is about normal 6 volt frontmount coil resistance. 1.2 ohm coil + 1.2 ohms ballast resistor uses up the full 6 battery volts so you read about 3 volts at the coil terminal. Simple series resistance. ok?

If'n TISCO put a 12 volt sticker on their new coil, I'd sure be for painting 12 volts on the coil so you know 20 yrs from now after the sticker falls off.

And if'n TISCO sez to use BOTH their supplied resistor and the "infamous ballast resistor", thats what I'd do until contraindicated with weak sparkies and slow/hard starting. But at least you have a "bench-mark" to start from. I'd also do a coil terminal voltage check after installation and see if'n the voltage makes sense. And NO, I don't know what voltage to expect per TISCO scheme. (probably 6-8 volts)

And yes, I'd expect a real 12 volt roundcan coil to measure about 5 ohms, and a real 6 volt roundcan coil to measure about 2-1/2 ohms. I don't know what to expect from the 12 volt squarecan coil ennymores, but I think I would use it over the OEM 6 volt squarecan coil..... .Dell, a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons

Dell, thank you very much for your quick response, [and kind words].I will hook it up with both resistors just like the new coil was a 6v coil as per the instructions. if it works I will leave well enough alone if I find I need to remove one of the resistors then I will remove the coil and mark the under side of the coil as a 12v coil for future reference. again, thank you Dell
