12 volt conversion on 9n won't charge, HELP!

I was given a 9n tractor that has been converted. The charging gauge does nothing and I have to charge the battery every so often. Now I have looked at the wiring diagram for 12 volt conversion and everything seems right on that part. I am still using a 6 volt coil but a resister has been added and I checked to make sure the voltages were correct and they were. I have heard that a person might have to ignite or something like that to get the system to start charging is this correct? Can anyone help? THANKS.

Jason..... ...if'n yer alternator is the deceptively desireable 1-wire alternator, ya gotta JAZZ yer engine to about 1800 rpms before the alternator will "self-excite". Once excited, it'll charge at idle. But ya gotta do this EVERY time you start yer engine. Myself, I don't like to jazz a cold engine, thats why I like the 3-wire alternator that uses an IDIOT light like Chevy & GM intended..... ....Dell, a 12 volt advocate for the right reason

Jason,

Is your alternator the single wire or three wire set up?

Need to know.
