12 volts conversion

I'm the owner of an 8nan and a NAB. Both of them are 6 volts. The 8n is working perfectly, but the NAB (NAA kerosene version) needs a new generator and battery. Sounds like good opportunity to convert to 12 volts. I wouldlike to find a 10SI or 12SI three wire alternator or a similar one. The autoparts ask me about a serial number or any number for those alternators. Could someone help me??
A second question concerns the resistor to use in serie with the 6 volts coil: ? ohms and ? Watts.
I' learn a lot by reading all the posts. Many thanks to everybody.

Thanks to everyone and specially to Dell. I'll try to get the Bosch alternator and coil. I'll be back if any problem.

tooting my own horn here, CNH part number 87406905 conversion kit has a real QUALITY alternator and all the brackets, wiring, and instructions needed. The alternator used is a hybrid design using parts from two different Delco 10SI alternators.

Whatever you go with, you'll be better off with a low-output alternator. Generally speaking, the lower amperage alternators have better LOW RPM performance due to the design of the stator winding.

Good luck in belgium either way

Thanks for so prompt responses. I'did'nt tell you that I'm leaving in Europe (Belgium) where those tractors are really rare. I'm a little afraid about the shipping costs for a conversion kit and I know that I can do the wiring by myself. The 12 volts coil is the best idea. The most difficult is to make shure to get the good alternator (Delco 10SI or equivalent).
Another question: is 55 Ah a good battery size, or do I need something more powerfull??
Thanks to all the gourous...

Constant..... ...should have realized you were not American (and that is O.K.) because TVO tractors are NOT COMMON in USA.

Theres is NO LAW that says you have to use a Delco 10SI alternator for a 12 volt conversion. The 10SI is popular because it has a built-in voltage regulator and it is cheap because it is so common used on many American cars.

Infact, in your situation, I'd get a Bosche alternator for VolksWagon and a VolksWagon 12 volt coil. And make my own alternator bracket to fit.

The only thing you really want is an alternator with BUILT-IN voltage regulator.

One other NOTE: you will need to pay attention to the alternator pulley. Farm tractors use wide pulley belts (5/8" or approximately 15mm) You can't run narrow belts because the water pump and crankshaft pulleys are all driven by the side wedge of the belt..... ..... .Dell, a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons

Interesting VW actually used at least 3 different alternators in their 74 and later bugs. the Bosch with eternal VR. the motorala with external VR and the Bosch one wire. All interchagable in the alternator equiped cars. One wire has a bad reputation of not charging well at low RPM and also since this particular alternator is favored with conversion people it has become a favorite white box copy so one may not always be getting Bosch quality. Original pulleys for these alternators are shim adjust therefore easy to fit the woder N belt. These alterators are also band mount which works well on 8N but more problem on NAA. If I may suggest this conversion produces a better/less problem result when using the 12V VW generator and VR. The 12V Bosch blue coil is the way to go.

Constant..... ....well NAB's are certainly rare. And unless you're dead set on home-brewing your own alternator attachment brackets and are intimately knowledgeable about 12 volt conversion wiring schemes.

I URGE YOU to consider the MERITS of a "kit" which already include a Delco 10SI alternator that your stupid autoparts person can't seem to find without a serial number. Tell'em its for a Ford Convertable thats painted red and gray.

I personally would use a real 12 volt roundcan ignition coil instead of the cheaper 12 to 6 volt conversion resistor scheme. Its simpler and you get HOTTER sparkies..... ....Dell, a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons

When they ask you if it has air conditioning--which they will--tell them no.

Your mileage may vary
