OK hear is the question. Dell just mentioned a 12-6 volt ballast resistor with the original resistor wired in series to the original 6 volt coil, why would this set up be better than using a 12 volt coil? btw my tractor is a '40 9N still six volts(not much longer) Stumpy

Stumpy..... ....its NOT necessarily better, just cheaper. The modern squarecan 12 volt frontmount ignition coil is only about 5 years old. about $40 and the 12 to 6 volt converting resistor is about $4. Ya pays yer moneys and takes yer choices..... ...Dell, A 12 volt advocate for the right reason, whats yours?

That said, I haven't found the right reason to convert my eazy starting 6 volt 52 8N, and I know how and why to do it right, the first time. Infact, I know 7-ways to do it right.

reason 1 my six volt starter is drawing way to many amps, six and twelve volt reman starters are about the same price.
reason 2 my tractor has no lights 12 volt versions are much easier to find as I am not looking for 100% originality.
reason 3 since I am turning into a tractor junkie and a recovering jeep junkie I have several 10si alternators around, but no six volt generators.
reason 4 dag gone it I don't want to buy another battery charger.
reason 5 the wiring in my tractor looks like it was old when edison lit up his first bulb.

I do have the ability to rewire this as a 12 volt system, and would like to use the brand new $31.50 six volt coil I just put in as a final attemp to "just make it through the winter ". Not trying to bea smart guy, Dell, but I do feel more at home with 12 volt neg ground system. However ifin I can save acouple o bucks by using a resitor,I am all for it. Might you have that part number? thanks for your help! stumpy

Stumpy..... ....most N's are converted to 12 volts as a bandaide to starting a wornout engine by hitting the 6 volt starter with 12 volts to really spinett. But the laws of physics can't be repealed, 12 volts on a 6 volt starter gonnna have twice as many amps draw as 6 volts on the same starter.

I'm not trying to talk you outta converting to 12 volts, just pointing out a few things, like 6 volt headlights arn't that difficult to find. And gotta confess that ol' 6 volt starter sounds like its on its dying leggs to ears used to modern rice-rocketts 12 volt whizzers.

And if'n ya wants yer new 6 volt frontmount coil to live the winter on a 12 volt conversion, ya gotta use BOTH the "infamous ballast resistor" mounted on the backside of your dash panel AND a 12 to 6 volt converting resistor. Hook'em up in series like flashlight batterys between the ignition switch ON and the coil terminal. And unlike flashlight batterys, resistors don't care who is first or backwards.

I always let you ask your local automotive electrical parts person to supply a 12 to 6 volt converting resistor. Mak'em look'em up and earn their money 'cuz theres about 4 different resistor manufacturers outthere with different part numbers to electrically accomplish the same thing; convert 12 volts to 6 volts..... .Dell, who reminds you of the 6 VOLT MANTRA: "keep'em clean, bright, and tight".

slept on it last night Dell, my generator works so I will buy a new six volt starter (draws 180 amps, too many according to fo4 I&T) and replace tractor wiring harness(cheap and easy to order looks like). I think the generator looks better than an alternator, though like I said, not looking for 100% originality. I just want it to start reliably when it is cold. thanks for your help/input dell. I'll post after repairs. stumpy
12 - 6 volts for the wallets reason !
