12 V charging problem questions

I am trying to help a friend that has an old 12 v conversion. It has a Delco alternator with one big wire and two smaller wires out the back, a regulator that I can't see how the wires are hooked up, and a swithch that he says he flips on for a minute to start the system charging.
Lately the switch doesn't get the system to charge. Taping on the regulator with a screwdriver handle helps once in a while. I have never seen anything like this so would like suggestions on where to start and how to get it working again.
Thank you

It alternator tests good. But I was told that this is an older alternator that came with a seperate voltage regulator. The bad news was that the regulator to match is no longer available.
This alternator is not the same size as the ones I have used on my 600 and 800 conversions so I am guessing it was taken from some older car. I hope to get at the regulator as soon as the weather warms up. The high today was only 15° F so working outdoors isn't fun.

RWK..... ....Since the 12 volt Delco 10-SI alternator has a BUILT-IN voltage regulator, I'm NOT CERTAIN why your friend has the 6 volt squarecan voltage regulator still wired into his 12 volt converted 8N electrical system.

The Delco 10-SI requires a "switched excite" voltage to start charging. GM does it with an idiot lite. You need someway to keep the alternator's internal solidstate gutts from backfeeding electrical power to the ignition coil or you will never beable to turn your engine off. That switch is just fine, infact its better than an idiot light (as long as your friend remembers to turn the switch OFF). Lotta guys use a push-button doorbell switch to accomplish the momentary "excite" to get the alternator charging.

ME? First thing I'd do is take the alternator into a parts place for a "free" alternator checkout. If'n it don't check good, then a 1-wire Delco 10-SI conversion might be a viable alternative to trying to figger out how the shadetree mechanic screwed up a simple conversion. In which case, you won't need the "excite" switch or squarecan voltage regulator eather..... ....Dell, a 12 volt advocate for the right reason

If you tap on the reg. and it starts working the contacts in the reg are pitted. replace it. Or just go to the one wire alternator, like Dave says the reg is about $15 but it will not be a sure fix. And the alt. will go some time in the future. Your call. hope this helps

You can get a one wire alternator at napa, which is a direct replacement for the delco he has.for 62 bucks, its not worth the hassle to work on it for a few hours.
