While researching options for replacing my cutout I see that teh Model A guys (Snyder's Antique Auto Parts www.snydersantiqueauto.com) offers a voltage regulator in the tin can that is used when a 12V battery is used with a 6V generator.

Has anyone tried this? If the 6V generator can keep the 12V battery charged, this seems like the way to go.

Any info is appreciated.

FYI I am running a 1944 2N with a third brush single post generator.

DC I have been running a 12 volt battery and a 3 brush generator with a cutout with the third brush turned up for 14 years it works fine on mine keeps the battery well charged even running the lights it still stays bright.I have never replaced the generator but have replaced the cutout once due to age not abuse. You will need a 12/6 volt reducer on the wire going to the coil of course. In my opinion its the most trouble free way to go.Good luck...R.M. In an effort to keep the old tractor as original as practical I think I will maintain the generator and either use the 12V battery, special regulator, and voltage drops OR just keep using the 6V battery with the voltage regulator.

Thanks for the help.

The most trouble free way to go is an alternator. There is a VERY good reason that your car no longer sports a generator. Sure, they'll work most of the time if you keep 'em "clean, bright, and tight" as Dell says, but they require a lot of extra work.

Don't be too hard on the genny... My JD B was converted to 12v by merely putting in a 12v battery, and cutting the charge wire from the 6v genny, where it hooked to the battery post, and folding it back.. etc...

According to the previous owner it has been like that for over a decade... I doubted that the genny even worked anymore.. running open like that..

I hooked it up,and installed a new 6v battery and it still charges at about 7 amps which is max, per the manual for that model... pretty nice... I cant figure out why they went to 12v on it.. 6v kicks the starter over fine..and a 6v battery is cheaper than a 12v.. or at least the same price as a cheap one... tsc has a 29.99 6v battery.. the only place you can find a 29.99 12v battery is like the red series at wallmart..( not knocking them the wally-mart batteries..,.. I have one of those in my NAA.. and and 66 cub and they are running fine..)
