12 Volt Question

Greetings;
I am in the process of doing a 12 volt conversion on a '53 NAA. I bought a kit with everything in it but the battery. I made all the connections as shown but I cannot get a peep out of the starter. The battery is brand new and charged. There is a possibility that I mounted the solenoid upside down, which would mean the 2 terminals there are reversed. By the time I fiquired that out it was getting dark-next so that is next weekend's job now. Also, I noticed that the alternator has a double prong male connector on the back of it. The wiring harness that came with the kit only has one red wire that attaches to the back of the altenator and no other plug or wire that is shown to go to the alternator. What are those connections for? Do they have any purpose in this application? Cheers, Erik

The conversion kit is from Sam's Tractors and the alternator type isn't listed in the description, but I will definitely e-mail Sam and ask him the same question. I did check the starter switch with an ohm meter and found that it was working and did indeed complete the circuit to ground, so I suspect flipping the leads on the solenoid is the answer. Thanks, Erik

The alternator is probably a one-wire version of a standard Delco 10SI. (This is probably the most common alternator used for conversions.)

If so, the two terminals on the side don't need to be connected (you might need to jump one of the to the BAT terminal to get the alternator to startup the first time -- and the alternator usually needs to be running at a good speed before it works).

If it's not, post another thread (so it's up on top of the board) and someone here will tell you how to wire the other version.

I have no idea what type of alternator you have.. the seller is going to have to tell you how to hook it up.. especially if it came in a kit.

As for the starter.. that big thumb switch just completes the ground path for the solenoid whish is normally internally hot. In the event you turned the solenoid around.. it isn't hot anymore. Set it up the other way around.. or if it 'died'.. get a replacement or a new style solenoid...

good luck
