This might be a silly question but here it is....

How can I tell if my tractor is wired for 6v or 12v? I bought it with a 12v battery positive ground, but the points keep burning out.

If you have an alternator as opposed to a generator, you have 12 volt. If it's an alternator and your 12v battery is hooked up POSITIVE ground, you'll fry the diodes. Alts are supposed to be NEG ground. If you can't visually tell the diff between an alternator and a generator, I recommend you get local help that can see your tractor in person. You will be out of your league. (Having said that, I'm sure someone will point out that the N's generator can be remanufactured into an alternator that would look like a generator. BUT, that's a very rare bird)

A PROPERLY done 12v conversion can use the same 6 volt wiring harness but with an added resistor(s) to reduce voltage to coil back to 6 volt. You still have to have battery NEG ground and you have to reverse the coil leads + to + and - to -.

Ok.. I'll kick the kettle into the fire... cummins re-man electrical products sells a 12v pos grnd alternator under two different part numbers based on amperage ratings. I saw a listing for them at a local Mack dealers parts counter. The alt's looked like delco units...

That said, I doubt anyone would go to the trouble to get a pos grnd alt... especially at the price listed.. ( 3xx.xx )!!!

Gents, a 6 volt generator will put out 12 volts but you have to limit the current or it will burn up. It can also be rewound for 12 volts with more turns of smaller wire. I have my Farmall H 6 volt generator putting out 12 volts for 4 years now with no ill effects and using a lawn tractor head light for the current limiter (same function as ballast resister).

Gary-

How much did it cost you to have your gen rewound for 12 volts?

Realize also that increasing DIRECT current requires an NON linear increase in required hp from your engine just to spin it.

Buying a converion kit that uses a Delco alt is probably cheaper too.

Gary T: I have been running a 8N positive ground like that for 15 years.Works great.Has never bothered my generator. To me its by far the least troublesome way to convert to 12 volts. But like the other way you still gotta reduce it before you get to the coil.. Have a good Weekend R.M. In AL.
