Well, just spent the whole day converting my 48 8N, and I do mean whole day. Started about 8 this AM and finished about 7:30 PM. Just to be fair I did make 2 runs to the local Schucks and a 12 mile run to get a battery from my mothers barn. I had 2 Mitsubishi alternators from Mazda RX7's.Both have I.C.regulators built in. I tested them by putting 12V to the exciter circuit and spinning them with the impact wrench, when they reached a certain RPM I got voltage, one was easy to tell which spade connector was the field exciter, it was a 90 amp and I wanted to use it, but I couldnt swap the pulley. The other alt(65 amp) didnt seem to make a difference which spade I used, I got voltage useing both. I followed the instructions from this board to the letter for wiring. Although I couldnt find an RU-100 resistor anywhere, I was able to get a ballast resistor from Schucks for about $5. I am chomping at the bit to find out if all is well, I think the battery I picked up is shot. All I got on a start try was solenoid growl. I'll give it all night to charge and try tomorrow. I guess if the panel light in my curcuit doesnt work, I'll figure out how to swap the pulley out and use the other alternator.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

put a tisco 8NE10306 resistor (at most tractor shops) in series with your OEM resistor behind the dash, and run your six volt coil till you get tired of driving the tractor. Tisco uses this in their 12V conversion kit, and a similar one is in the New Holland conversion kits too.

Good Luck

Bill,

Did you change your coil from a 6V to a 12V? If not, you may fry it. Check the archives for Dell's solution. When I converted my 48 8n to 12V with a 12V coil, the ballast resistor worked fine for a year. Then I went through 2 coils and 2 ballast resistors trying to replace it. Used Dell's .5 ohm 10 watt solution, and haven't fried another coil. If you still have a 6V coil, better try to get a RU-100 at Radio Shack. Ron - TX

Tried calling Radio Shaft, they didnt know what I was talking about. When I asked for a .5 ohm 10 watt resistor they also said they didnt have anything in that range. Is that where you got yours? Did you ask for an RU-100 resistor? Did you put your RU-100 in series in place of the ballast resistor? I know, lots of questions.

""Radio Shaft, they didnt know what I was talking about. When I asked for a .5 ohm 10 watt resistor they also said they didnt have anything in that range.""

That's because tandy hires idiots..er.. salespeople.. not technically minded people.

The resistors Dell refers to are 1 ohm 10w ceramic power resistors.. the come in a 2 pack. you paralell them, making a .5 ohm 20 watt resistor... the people at R/S.. obviously don't know ohms law, or they would/could have suggested that to you.

I have given their online ordering a pet name... it is officially.. 'radio shack unlimited'.. I call it 'radio shack unreliable'.

Also, if the indicator light doesn't work.. try a big diode.. they sell the large ones in 6 amp ones in a 4 pack.. and the epoxy rectifiers in 2 packs I think... works much better than the lamp.. though you wave to wire it in the right direction... ( but there's only 2 directions! )

RU 100 is a Standard [Blue Streak] part number. Most any real auto parts store--NAPA, Carquest, etc. ought to be able to produce one for a couple of bucks.

Your mileage may vary
