12-volt conversion help

I have a 52 8N (sidemount) that won't start. I'm pretty sure the electrical system is fried so I've ordered a conversion kit and the heavy duty 12-volt coil from this sponsoring web-site. I say I'm sure the electrical system is shot because i connected the negative terminal of the battery to ground.

My question is, considering all the damage I have done to my tractor, what all do I need to replace? The kit includes the alternator, bracket and wiring and I ordered a 12-volt coil, do I need a resistor too? What about a regulator? I replaced all the wiring a couple of years ago, so will I need to replace the wiring too?

Thanks for the help..

Have to agree with bg, get it right with the 6-volt and you won't have any problem. The N's were designed for 6-volts and will operate without any problems if everything is clean, bright and tight. Lots of problems with 12-volt conversions, check the archives.

If you need to run 12-volt items -CD player, portable TV, cooler, etc- :) then the conversion is ok.

The 12-volt conversion is just a quick fix for lost engine compression it is cheeper to (upgrade)rather than rebuild the engine, but it does not fix the original prob. The best thing to do is rebuild the engine and solve the problem or (upgrade) it and worry about spending more money later on the engine.

Probably not what you want to hear--but

First thing you need to do is make it work on six volts. If you have troubles with the stock system there are books and folks who can help. If you start with a cobbled up six volt system and botch a twelve volt conversion you may be in need of more help than you can get here. Get yourself a fifteen dollar wiring harnass, get an I T FO 4 manual, wire it right, polarize the generator, fix the ignition if it needs it and start out with a working six volt system. Then if you absolutely have to waste a hundred bucks and the price of a battery on a twelve volt conversion follow the instructions that came with the kit.

Your mileage may vary
