12V conversion not working

Completed the 12 volt conversion on my 9N. I double and triple checked the wiring to the wiring diagram I found on the N-Series site.

When first completed I measured 14.8v on the single wire coming from the alternator.

Note: This is a 1 wire alternator it does not have a P1 or P2.

All my lights work, but after using the tractor 2 or 3 times the battery goes dead.

When first hooked up the amp meter read backwards. I swapped the wires, but now I get no reading on the amp meter.

What should it read when charging?

Could my alternator been fried because the amp meter was wired backwards?

Need help from you experts

Thanks Ron

Ron..... ..ammeter don't care, 6 or 12 volts, positive or negative ground. BUT your alternator does care NEGATIVE GROUND otherwize it will puke its gutts. Suggest you take it into any autoparts part selling place for "free" alternator tests. 14.8 volts is normal alternator output..... does it output anything now?

If you can ONLY run your tractor 2 or 3 times before the battery goes dead, you may have other issues. It only takes about 3 amps to run your tractor (without headlights). It should take HOURS of tractor running to discharge a good 12 volt battery. Have your battery tested for free at the autoparts store.

If both alternator and battery test good, then you have a WIRING PROBLEM, and you will need to be the detective..... ....respectfully, Dell..... a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons

Dell,

I haven't had an opportunity to test the alternator yet, or even see if it is still putting out the 14.8 volts.

If the alternator is fried, do you have a part# of the 3 wire GM alternator everyone elses uses?

I will test either tonight or this weekend

The only real differences in the 10SI alternators are how much current they put out, what pulley they come with and where the P1/P2 terminals come out. If you go to a salvage yard, just ask for an alternator from any mid-70's GM car. If you buy from a parts store, pick the cheapest one you can find.

Ron,

When I converted my 48 8N, I told the salvage yard I wanted an alternator for a mid-70s GM car. Mine is the 3 wire (has P1 & P2).
