Bill in Orono, MN-At end of his rope. 02-09-2002 07:33:55 63.229.210.40 Report to Moderator	Here are the facts: 1945 2N Runs 5/8 throttle and more, dies below I have not replaced Dist cap Coil Internal engine parts Govenor Valves don't stick New head gasket Points, spark advance, all electrical seems ok (it should be, most is new) When replacing dist. on tractor I noticed that there is some play or lash between the cam and the "teeth" of the distrubutor. Any ideas? I've tried everything I know. I am going out to get a compression tester. If this (compression) ain't it I may drag it off to a shop. [Reply]   [No Email]

Old mechanic use his torch with oxegen, only on and run torch around manifold @ the block while engine was runing , it would speed up,manifold was warpped had it planed NEW TRACTOR!!!! But it really sounds like your distributor's spark advance isn't working. We see alot of wear in old distributors, broken springs, hung weights, pivot pins bent and worn. I have a new centrifigal advance gadget in the dist. The old one was shot. I drove it about 20 miles today. It actually idled down fairly well. I discovered something new. My exhaust, when tractor is running slowly, sucks back in every once in while. I had an ex-mechanic turned lawyer show me this little trick. So I may have a sticky or worn valve and/or seat. I haven't been out your way in a long time, but there was a Ford tractor dealership on the west side of Long Lake and if they are still there I'm sure a mechanic would take a look at it. If not that, a road trip out to Palmer Fossums place would be a bunch of fun. He's only an hour - maybe 1:15 away from you and it is always good to visit his place. It would be really good if there was somebody with a 9N or 2N close so you could try your dist and maybe carb on their tractor to see if the failure could be isolated that way. My tractors are side mounts so I couldn't help with that.   [Reply]  [No Email]

When you say it dies below 5/8 throttle, how does it die? Does it shut off suddenly and completely, gradually loose power, spit and sputter, backfire, afterfire, or what? When it is running at advance throttle, how does it run? Good power? Smooth? Does the governor work here? Does pulling the choke out help? What about that carb? Has it been cleaned, adjusted? Could be the coil, ignition switch. C'mon back after a compression test. Be sure to have wet and dry #s and hold the throttle open when making the test. ray   [Reply]  [No Email]
