Diesel fuel leaking into engine oil

Hi all,

I have a 1974 Massey Ferguson 135 with the 3 cylinder Perkins diesel. The little tractor has been kept pretty busy keeping our laneway blowed out with all the snow we have been getting here in Western Quebec. It has been doing a great job, but recently I have noticed that the oil level is going up over the full mark and I think that the diesel fuel may be leaking into the engine oil.

A couple of questions - should I keep using the 135 while this is happening and is there an easy way to find out what is causing the diesel to leak into the oil?

I don't have a garage in which I can work on the engine so any repairs would have to be done outside, so if I could leave the repair until summer I would prefer to do that.

I hope everyone reading this list has a wonderful holiday season.

Cheers,
Richard

I have a mf35 with perkins diesel that had the same problem. Don't know if we have the same engine but mine had a faulty (cold start)manifold heater which was allowing fuel to flow into the intake.

Yes, unlikely that it is injectors.

I've had it happen three times, once in 2705, once in 550 combine and once on Cummins 5.9 in '93 Dodge W250, twice lift pump, once injection pump.

We had about a foot of snow, all gone now, about 40 miles due east of Detroit, Michigan.

Correct me if i'm wrong, and i am not trying to be a stickler here, but if it were the injectors themselves wouldn't the rings have to be really shot to allow enough fuel down to the case to see a noticeable increase im sump level, and if they leaked that much you would hydrauilicly lock the engine too.

I'm with them change the lift pump first.

How much snow do you have? I am in western maine and we had about 2.5 feet till this last weekend rainstorm! What a bummer, bring on the snow, the tractor is plugged in and waiting.

It is probably one of the following:

1) Bad lift pump

2) Bad front seal on injection pump

3) Fowled injectors

First thing to do is check the lift pump. If you take it off and disassemble it you can usually find the hole in the diaphragm. Then just replace the lift pump. Checking that out will take just a little longer than an oil change.

If it is not the LP you are in for a little more labour and cost.

If it were me I would just swap out the LP and cross my fingers.
I would not run the tractor unless absolutely necessary.

JP.

You can get a heritage parts lift pump. Make sure to get the o-rings that go in with the fuel lines. I replaced mine and didn't find out till later. When it warms up I'll have to put them in. It leaks a bit now. Dave

Hi Folks,

Thanks to all those who replied to my posting even over the holiday season. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are resting up for the New Years Eve party.

I am going to try and replace the lift pump in the New Year and see if that solves the problem. It is quite oily around the area where the lift pump is. I notice that Heritage Parts list 2 different lift pumps, one with the glass bowl and one without which seem to both fit my Perkins diesel engine. The one I currently have on the tractor does not have the glass bowl. Does it matter which one I use to replace it with?

Cheers,
Richard
