Just got my hands on an mf40 with the perkins diesel. I believe the tractor has in the neighborhood of 10k hours. In fact the last rebuild was completed may 15, 25 years ago! I haven't tried a compression test, just cause it smokes so bad that i am assuming and have already ordered a rebuild kit, but i am curious are perkins known to be smokers when cold? like detroit diesels. Frankly i haven't run it more than 20 minutes straight since i got it, since it is so smokey, so it the water temp hasn't got over 140.

The smoke is quite blue, sometimes a little gray, but quite blue. That tells me the rings are shot. I pull the dip stick and i can feel and see blow by, even little spots of oil blow out.

I have been looking for a reason to do a rebuild for years, this seems to be my chance.

their isn't much else that would cause blue smoke anyway is there?

Hi,
Broken or seized il control rings is the most likely cause but don't forget to check valve guides and broken or loose stem seals if you have them fitted.

Hi,
I agree with Richard. What colour is the smoke?
If it is predominantly white, check the thermostart to see if it is leaking. A 'wet' inlet manifold will confirm this.
