Looking to replace my 8n with a mf 35 diesel. It is so much more tractor, plus i really want diesel. Does anyone know of any in new england that are available? I know of two but they both have the 4 cylinder diesel, which i understand is not the best. However i cannot seem to find a perkins around. What would be a fair price for an un-restored but working tractor? perkins or standard.

Is the four cylinder really that bad? I will use it mostly in the summer, but of course will be plowing snow in the winter, and even with a block heater it won't start? I really don't want to use ether knowing how bad it is for an engine.

One more question too. I here that the 4 cylinder has a timing chain. Does the perkins have a chain or is it gear driven timing? Chains sort of scare me as far as there longevity.

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't reject the MF-135. Its a generation newer and sometimes more versatile than the MF-35. And if its diesel its always a 3 cylinder Perkins.

I rebuilt the 3 cylinder perkins in my 1961 MF-35 diesel deluxe....It was my Fathers tractor passed on to me....This was the first rebuild ever on this tractor. There is no timing chain, the cam shaft and fuel pump are all gear driven. I made pictures when I took it apart to ensure I got the timing marks back corectly. It is a great tractor and starts easily when temp is above 40 degrees outside. Below 40 it needs it's glow plug in the intake manifold. The low end torque provided by the 3 cyl diesel ensures the engine will run a long time.

I have never seen a Standard that Re:35 diesel dlx in reply to 8njohn, 04-06-2007 08:35:34
I have never seen a Standard 4 diesel that was in running condition! I have 1 that I take tractor parts off of. I have a nice 35xx Perkins that is a great machine starts at 0* with glow. But is starting to use oil. But a real good tractor for $1500 last year. I plow snow with it. Under NO circumstance buy one with a Standard diesel!! Unless you have a a Perkins 3 diesel in your pocket to re-engine it. Put a want ad on Craig's list in the farm section. Here I see them occasionally on Craig's List for sale

I have a 35 diesel with a Standard engine. It is a hard starter but my glow plugs are not working. My F250 2000 super-duty is a hard starter too without glow plugs. I am quite satisfied with the Standard once it is warmed up. Unfortunately it does take a shot or two of ether to start it. The best thing about it, and this probably applies to the Perkins engine as well, is that I can run it all day on a tank of fuel. Which compared to our Farmall and Minne Jetstar is a huge plus!

John:

The Perkins uses helical gears to drive the camshaft.

I cannot help you locate a 35 in NE.
