I have been thinking about converting the dynamo on my Perkins powered MF 135 to an alternator. I have been looking on the internet but there were so many different things. How do you wire it in? Is it straght forward?

Please help!

Not hard to change - done a couple.
Need to fabricate new brackets.
Remember the alternator needs to be turned off when not used as opposed to a generator so carefull with the wiring.

There is a one-wire altenator that you just run the wire to the ammeter and from the ammeter to the battery. It is incredibly easy to hook up. If your generator is a Delco, the pulley will even fit the Delco alternator. The disadvantage of these is they have to turn at higher than idle to generate electricity. I have one on my old TO-20 Ferguson and it works great. There are also 2 or 3 wire ones that I'm sure someone will tell you about, and I understand they give full charge at very low RPM.

My MF-135 generator works fine too.

If its a Continental gas engine, note that the tachometer is driven from the generator and alternators with that tachometer drive capability are not to be found, so you end up having to replace the tachometer with something electronic working off the ignition.

If you have a Perkins engine the tachometer is driven off the camshaft of the engine, but many of those already came with an alternator.

Why do you want to change it? My generator works great on a 135. Dave
