I have a 4 cylinder standard diesel massey 35 and live in Prince George BC where it gets very cold in the winter. my question is can I use a 10/30 diesel oil instead of 15/40 and will it help as this engine is hard to start even in warm weather Thanks Again for the help

I've found that these engines run much better on 'HD30'oil. I don't know whether it is available where you are, it is sold here in UK as a very basic Heavy Duty monograde diesel engine oil with no additives. As this was the type of oil which these old engines were designed to run on they seem to prefer it. I used to get problems with my 23C glazing up and becoming hard to start in just 50 hrs running on high spec 15W40. I deglazed the bores, fitted new rings and changed to HD30 and have done a few hundred hours and still start first time. I can't comment on the cold climate conditions. You can improve the cold starting by fitting glow plugs to the head, or by drilling a small hole in the combustion chamber directly under the injector to make the engine Direct Injection on starting and InDirect Injection on running.

Hi,

Yes you can use a lighter oil. There is also a 0W30 diesel oil which might be better again. If you have an electrical outlet then a block heater is a great addition - I installed one on my JD450 last winter and it made a heck of a difference in starting.

The new fully synthetic diesel oils are 5W40 rather than 15W40. They are extremely easy flowing when cold. Mobil Delvac One Diesel oil 5W40 is one, but may have to get form distributor or large truck stop. Shell Rotella also has a Diesel Synthitic 5W40 you may be able to find more readily. Tom

Hi Mark, you can certainly use a lighter wieght oil in the winter, this should aid in cranking. The 4cyl standard diesels are often hard to start. I installed a heater in the lower rad hose this year on my 135 and works great, of course this has the AD3 152 which are way easier to start. HTH. JJ.
