Been a long time owner of an 8n which has performed very well for me, but my love is of diesel engines. I have been thinking about going looking for a mf35 or 135. What do you all think of those two models. And what is the going rate for one in good running but unrestored shape. And also where in the states would it be easiest to find one?

Thank you

John:

I have a very good 1951 8N with Sherman Combo and 2 MF-35s with Perkins diesels. Though I love my 8N and find if just the right tractor for some jobs, the MF-35s will do nearly twice the work as the 8N. Additionally, they will do about the same amount of work while using 1/2 the fuel.

I'm considering selling one of my 35s. Email me if interested. I'm near Cincinnati.

We used to have an 8N but needed a little more power and a live PTO to run a mower. It was traded in on a used 135 diesel. I have run a 35 diesel as well. They are both good tractors but the 135 has some very useful improvements. The 135 has direct injection which makes it a lot easier to start in the cold. It also has the advanced Ferguson system with better controls for the 3 pt. and constant pumping if you ever want to run remote hydraulics. A 135 will probably cost a little more but I think is worth the extra $$. That said, a good 35 would be worth considering. Make sure that if it's a diesel it's a 3 cyl. [Perkins]. One of the best engines ever made in gas or diesel. Hope this helps. Dave

I've had my MF-135 for nearly 20 years. Its not for sale. Initially I farmed 23 acres of hay, then row crops with it. Then I bought a JD 4020 to have more ground clearance for cultivation. Lately with going to notill, I've put the 135 back to work doing planting and most of the spraying. The 4020 now has narrow rear tires only for mid summer spraying.

There are those who prefer the diesel 135 to the gas. There were two gas versions, one a Continental Z-145, the other with a Perkins 3 cylinder engine. Other than wearing out rocker arms from lack of oil up on top the head they both are decent engines with plenty of repair parts available.

Prices are probably about $4500 to $6000 depending on condition and location. They are spread over much of the world.
