Obviously i have an 8n and i am thinking about going to a diesel about the same size. I have been told that the MF 135 was considered the best diesel tractor of the compact side offered. How common were they, are they really tough to find today, and how much should an unrestored tractor cost?

I had both MF 135's. Continental gas engine and Perkins gas engine, but no diesel. Both are good engines and thrifty on gas for the HP. Parts are available for both. Perkins parts are available from MF dealers, and some carry parts for Continental. The best source for Continental engines is:

well there are more Re: 135 in reply to 8njohn, 08-16-2006 16:51:54
The MF 35 the predesessor to the 135 is also a great tractor with a lower price tab and sometimes with a few less features like PS. But dont make the BIG mistake of getting with anything but the 3 cyl perkins,
There is another low cost great tractor that is the Fordson Dexta with the 3 cyl diesel. This Tractor comes as the Dexta, New preformance Dexta, Super Dexta, and the Ford Dexta 2000 this is the english version. The Ford 2000 USA with the ford 4 diesel are also a good choice. The 135 MF always seems to command a premium price. Hey good luck ;))

The four cylinder Continental gas engine is not at all rotten. It may not be as miserly with fuel as the 3 cylinder Perkins diesel but its comparable with the 3 cylinder Perkins gas that was used some years. All three are good engines and parts are not too hard to find.

The comparison between the 8N and a MF-135 is like toy and work tool. The 135 does a great deal more work than the 8N, work that the 8N thought it could but can't beccause its too light and low powered. I've had an 8N and I still have my MF-135 and its NOT for sale.

I should made it clear that is the 4 cyl Standard diesel (maker) engine;((.
The Cont is a decent engine but expensive and harder to find parts forthan the perkins.

As far as I can tell, the Standard diesel was only used on TEA 20, none after that, for sure I know it was not used in the 135. Its not in either the I&T manual on the 135 or the MF parts book on the 135 that I have.

So far my Continenta Z-145 hasn't needed many parts and I was able to build a now rocker arm assembly from raw steel and bronze and I expect that to last another half century.

Well its seems that the Standard gassers are great engines. Now I have never seen on of the diesel ones that run. I understand the diesels werent bad if they could ever get started ;((

John:

The MF-135, especially one with the Perkins diesel engine, is indeed a great tractor. It will do nearly twice the work that your 8N will do and use much less fuel doing it.

MF-135s are quite common and parts are readily available albeit a bit more expensive than those for your 8N.

MF-135s come with various options, e.g., PS, Multi-Power, power adjust rims, etc. Price, of course depends mostly upon condition. A good one with the Perkins diesel engine will bring $5,000+ in my area.
