How would a piston sleeve get dented? The dent is located on the Intake/Exhaust side up near the top. There is no other damage. It looks like someone took a ballpeen hammer and used the rounded side. The engine has to come down anyhow, but I am certainly curious as to what may have caused this. Aaron

Further inspection (and a neighbors help) point to a possible dropped #3 intake valve in this engines past. The engine is coming down for excessive oil consumption on cylinders 3 and 4. The #3 intake valve is newer as well as one piston. It looks like when the engine was torn down, the valve and the piston were replaced, but not the sleeve and the valve guide/seal. The sleeve is allowing oil to bypass the rings and the guide is admitting oil into the number 3/4 intake port. The oddity here is that the new piston is in #2 hole. Kinda like they thought the dents in #3 sleeve would tear up another piston so the new piston was put in #2 hole and #2 was moved to #3. Any questions and/or comments are certainly welcome here.

If the coolant ever froze that might push a dent into the sleeve, but I would think that there would be other damage as well.
