I got a MH44, I have replaced ALL the wiring on the entire tractor. Still have dead short!!! I am going to replace the points and the starter button switch thingy. When running I touched the pos side of the coil, made tiny spark. When I touched the neg side it made many more sparks. But the coil has no power to it unless the ignition switch is on and touching the pos side of the battery still causes tiny sparks. I also tried a different battery. Same story...HELP!! jim

jim, let's back the truck up.

Where and under what conditions do you have a dead short?

The dead short is there all the time. If the battery cables are hooked up, the battery will be dead the next day. A guy at work just told me that a diod could be the problem in the alternator. I'm going to get it checked out. thankx jim

The alternator has 6 diodes for rectifying the 3 phase ac to dc for your battery. If someone reversed the leads on a "jump start" they will have immediately fried the 3 diodes (to ground) in the alt. It will read a dead short from the battery hot lead.

Autozone will/can check the alt for you.

Start out by removing all the wires from the alternator, and taping them to prevent shorts, and see if your problem goes away. Then you'll KNOW it's the alternator!

Pay attention to where the wires are connected, for reconnection later!!!

Thank you for the info. I brought the alt to our local alt, starter rebuilder and the diods were fried. There was a 3 amp draw occuring. All fixed now!!!!! !!! The learning never stops.. jim
