Help! My 3 pt lift quit working on my 165D (1975 model, I think) It has remote hook ups, which has the control on top of the tranny case to switch to them or the 3 pt. which has been acting up a little bit now and then, but I would keep messing with the draft and the lift levers, and it would eventually start working again, up til now,and I can"t get it to do anything. The oil level is good.I"m hoping Dean, or one of you other guys has the answer to my problem. Thanks!!! P.S.dealer just put in new pto clutch

I have one more question: My remotes do not work either. I'm assuming since the position and draft levers both have to be in the "up" position for the remotes to operate, the adjustment that you described will take care of this also???

I have seen a few times that continued operation in the constant pumping range of the position control lever (such as with loader operation) will cause a slight groove or ridge to be formed on the control valve from the occilation designed to keep the control valve free, making it hard for the return spring to overcome it. More than likely though, your position control fork has dropped out of it's proper placement. Is your lever still moving freely or does it seem tight about halfway up the quadrant range? If you want to make sure it is the linkage before you bring it to the dealer (just assumeing, since you had them put in a pto clutch), Drain about 2.5 gallons of oil from the rear axle housing and remove the right side cover that is right next to your right heel when sitting on the tractor (it's the one with the dipstick), move your levers up and down the quadrant range and see if they are moving the control valve fork. Is the roller on the fork making contact with the internal linkage or is it stuck forward? If it is stuck forward, reach in and lightly push it toward the rear of the tractor, it might snap back against the linkage letting you know your control valve is sticking and needs to be replaced. If your draft or position levers do not move the lever you will need to have your lift cover adjusted. Sorry this is so long winded, hope it helps some.

Both position & draft levers have no effect?
I ask because on mine the position control stopped working, but if I pulled it to the top the draft control still worked. Re-setting the adjustments in the internal linkage solved my problem.

Jeff

Hey lonestarjeff. Say something more about how you got your position control to work again. My MF Industrial 20 is acting just like your 165 did. Thanks.

ChrisinMD:

Big Dean diagnosed my problem; the linkage inside the hydraulic case had taken a pretty hard knock(from loading round bales w/ 3-pt spear onto a trailer)which wacked out one or more of the adjustment settings in the position control linkage.

I used my I&T manual for the proceedure to pull the lift cover(you"ll need a hoist), flip it onto it"s back & check the adjustments. It"s pretty straight forward, but you have to be carefull w/ the valve control arm roller & standpipe(especially putting things back together).

I didn"t find any big problems inside, so I went thru each proceedure in the manual(took about an hour)for the internal adjustments. The whole deal from draining the case to refilling took about 3-4 hours.

It"s worked fine ever since.

Jeff

No, neither has any effect. I'm going to try what Chris suggested.

I"m sorry but I overlooked something that should be checked first,,, You said they just put in a PTO clutch, Is it still operating properly? Because that is what drives your hydraulic pump.

Yes, the pto is working fine. I just read what lonestar said about his....mine quit on me when I was loading round bales onto a trailer. Sounds like the same problem.

I guess I have have called it "adjusting the lift cover" for so long that I assumed that is the way everybody refered to "resetting the internal linkage" as Lonestarjeff puts it. We are both talking about the same thing, he just described it a whole lot simpler! In order to adjust the lift cover, your have to remove it, to remove it you need to remove the inspection cover with the dipstick to take out the control valve roller, why not just drain out enough oil to remove the inspection cover (2.5 gals vs 7 gals) so you can start the tractor before removing the lift cover and actually see what is going on. Lonestarjeff"s way & mine involve the same steps, he just isn"t as long winded as I am!!
