Hello, I have a MF-50 diesel. I guess it is a 1965 model. It has been a great tractor. I have a problem, the 3 speed shifter is stuck. The low/high is not. I can not figure out how to unstick the shifter. There is no cover on the top to access the shifter and I do not want to "split" the body. How can I get this problem resolved? I talked to my tractor store and they do not know. I guess because it is so old. I need this tractor real bad. Please help. Thank you!

Glenn, If this is similar to a 35 you can reach through the fill hole to the left of the shift lever with a large screw driver or similar tool and slide the large gear either forward or backward depending on what gear it is stuck in and it should slide in place. Be sure any pressure is off the drive line. I have done mine several times. If this doesn't help contact Big Dean. He posts here often and is a lot of help.

Glenn's on the ball. It's easier though if you can find a piece of 1/2" mild steel bar about 18 inches long. Make a soft 90 degree bend about 4 inches from one end. This can be inserted into to selector slot and gentle pressure applied until the selector moves back into place. The screwdriver is OK but it is a but hit and miss. When you have got it back it would be advisable to check the amount of free travel and up and down movement in the gear lever. If it's excessive you may have wear in the gear lever ball, ball pin or both and a problem that's going to re-occur sooner rather than later.
Good Luck

Glenn, Here is Big Dean's web address. Link Go to page two, it is the first item on the page. I use an old bumper jack tire tool, but a long screwdriver will do. I am mechanically challenged and have fixed this twice in just a minute or two. Good luck, C. T.

Thanks so much guys!!! I will try and see if that will work! I sure hope so because my only alternative would be to remove all the upper body and tank to get the steering/shifter cover off, and we all know what a pain that is! I'll go to Big Dean's web site and check him out. Thanks so much! This site will always be in my favs! Happy tractoring! Glenn.
