DIESEL QUESTION

My 3cyl Perkins diesel seems to be missing. I changed the fuel filter and the air filter is clean. It will puff white smoke when I open the throttle. It seems to iron out after a run but if I idle it and then accelerate the white smoke appears again and it just seems to miss. Could it be bad fuel? The engine only has about 70 hours on it. Your insights will be appreciated. Thanks. allen

I don't want to be a pessimist but it sounds like it could be water getting into a cylinder to me. Is the 70 hours since it was rebuilt or something? If so, I'd really suspect a cylinder head gasket problem at best and possibly a cracked block at worst. If you do have the head off, check the bit between the cylinder and stud holes very carefully. It very thin there. Hopefully its not that but I have had terrible trouble with this problem on a D3.152 and I'm told by a Perkins mechanic that they are prone to it, particularly if head is overtightened. I hope it isn't that. Don't know what else you could check. Missing could be caused by various things but its the white smoke that worries me. That's either water vapour or unburnt fuel. Don't know if water in fuel could cause it. Maybe. Or maybe a valve sticking/leaking.
