Can anyone tell me how to identify the owner of an apparently deserted tractor? The land that it is on is vacant. I tried the Tractor Registry, to no avail. It is a 1957 MF-50 S/N 515375. In front of the S/N are three letters that I believe to be SGM. Can anyone confirm this? Do they mean anything? Thanks.

contact the county assessor and see who owns the vacant lot.contact the owner and see if he wants to sell it or may want you to haul it off

If it isn't yours, it isn't yours for the taking. The "advise" below is a good way to get yourself thrown in jail. It "belongs" to someone. Or at least someones estate. Start with the county recorders office. Find out who is responsible for the taxes on that land. Ask nieghbors. But don't just go take it. The numbers you listed are the tractors serial numbers. They will tell you what year, and to some extent, what "options" the tractor was built with. I have a tractor setting in my garage, that set out on a "vacant lot" for several years. It belongs to my uncle. I know for a fact that you wouldn't havejust taken it, without a bit of buck-shot for your trouble.

I take your code of ethics seriously, and like yourself, I'm not inclined to just take. I'm in the process of trying to find out who owns the land. I was hoping I would be directed to an Internet site that has a comprehensive database of serial number versus last known owner. Like VIN. However, it is tempting to consider it scrapped, since the steering column with gauge console and shift box were on the ground. Two linkage rods that allow shifting are gone, and every bolt that holds the top of the transmission have been removed along with many others. No battery, and most electrical wiring has been forcibly disconnected. Other than that, I don't know anything about it other than what the ID numbers tell me. The engine is a Z134A500P. Is there any code in this? Thanks for your dose of what is right.

Ask around, chances are the owner is dead. There really isn't a way to identify tractor owners like cars(VIN). It's basically yours for the taking, but do ask around as somebody may know something. Chances are if nobody takes it and the land gets developed, the tractor will just be scrapped.

Donovan,

Please see my reply to IndydirtFarmer. I agree with you regarding it probably being deserted and that it will be scrapped when the land gets developed - and it will. However, we never know, there might be a grandson out there who is dying to get his hands on a tractor, just like me. I'm like many people who just love a mechanical challenge. The more I have to tear down, the more I learn how everything works and the more I know about the condition of the tractor. Pretty important stuff when it comes to operating, maintaining and safety.

I know the feeling. There is an abandoned Deere 6030 sitting in the weeds a few miles from where I live. It looks like a rusted heap of junk after sitting out for 15 years, but mechanicly it it is in great shape. The way I know is that I happened to stop by the shop at the Deere dealership dealership back in 1987 and that 6030 was in there getting a major overhaul. It was the only 6030 around here, so i stopped to take a look at her. At the time she was in good condition and I remember looking at the hourmeter and it was showing 4000 hours. It has run only about 600 hours since. I really want that tractor to restore, but the crotchety old geezer who now owns it would rather let it sit out in the field and rust than sell it.

boy i know even better how it feels. there is a to35 in the weeds behind my house(across the field) and it's been there for 20 years. the old guys son "owns" it....the engine is at his brothers house. it has to be stolen, the day it got there it was running, it was torn apart and there it has sat. it was and still is in great shape. it had brand new tires on it which have since rotted away. ui can't convince the old man, his son, or the grandson who "owns" it, to let ,me save it. and it sucks.
