Did I buy MF35 or TO35?

I recently bought a tractor uder the pretense it was an MF35. But it does not entirely fit the descriptions in the parts, service, and operator manuals I bought over the internet for the MF35. The serial number plate has been removed. The engine serial number exists; it is a gas Z134 engine. It has ground and engine PTO. I was told over the phone this model had live PTO, but best I can tell just a single stage clutch. The carburetor is a tsx361A which according to online cross references was used in the TO20 which has a completely different Continental engine. It has a fresh paint job and "Massey Ferguson 35" decal. Could it be TO35? If so how do I tell?

The plate with the serial number located on the dash should have TO35 as a prefix to the serial number. I have a 1955 TO35 with the Continental Z134 engine. Several of the castings have "MHF" where the later model MF35 has "MF". The tractor came with a two stage clutch. The two stages have a definite feel when you depress the clutch petal. Your clutch may need adjustment. The TO35 became the MF35 in the late 50's.

Just an idea here. Look for some of the casting numbers on the metal parts. For example, look on the thermostat body to the left of the upper radiator hose outlet from the engine. The casting number on this part on my MF35 is 181521M1 and above the number is MF contained in a rounded corner rectangle. I'm only guessing here, but if you see a lot of castings with MF on them then I'd guess it's a MF.

Lynn, Just curious, is it a "negative" ground? If not, the third possibility is FE35 which is a MF35 manufactured in Coventry, England. The single stage clutch was on the 35, the dual was on the 35 deluxe. Good luck. C. T.
