I have been away from this board (and my FE 35) for a while due to a couple of emergency eye surgeries (detached retina repair and scar tissue removal - getting older is a drag!!) Now that I have been able to get back on the tractor for an hour or so at a time I am having some further oil issues.

On Big Dean's site he warns about the cotter pin on the bellhousing being plugged to mask oil leaks. Mine moves freely and I did not see any appreciable accumulation of oil until I changed the fluids and started bush hogging.

Jack from NB recommended Coop Trans Hydraulic oil (uses it in all his MFs) and, I trust his experience but ... not only does my 3PH leak down much more quickly now there is also hydro/trans oil leaking at the bell housing.

Others on this board and the TBN board have said that the Coop Trans Hydralic is MUCH thinner (about 30 to 40 SAE) than the straight mineral 80/90 SAE recommended in the manual.

Now that I am using the tractor more should I:

1 - change the oil to 80/90 SAE and hope it helps the 3PH and reduces the leaking at the bell housing

2 - leave the Trans Hydraulic in and rebuild the hydraulic pump over the winter

3 - resign myself to splitting the tractor, replacing engine and transmission seals and rebuilding the pump (and doing whatever else is need once I am in there).

I am certainly leaning toward option one (simplest and cheapest) but I am interested in opinions on whether I am just putting off the inevitable.

Any suggestions, ideas, advice is welcomed.

Bob

Here is what I would do. Drain ALL the existing oil from the transmision/rear end/hydraulics. Pour about 6 or 8 gallons of diesel fuel in the tranny. Leave your 3 pt. hitch in the down position. Start up, and run EASILY up and down the drive for a couple minutes. Drain everything. Let it Drip dry for a while, then fill with GOOD oil. 90 wieght. Don't use hy-tran. Not the same stuff. As far as the engine, I use Pennsoil only. I've started using multi-wieght in everything, but still have a case of straight wieght oil, (SAE 30) so I'll use that in the old Massey-Ferguson 50, untill it's used up. Run the tractor and see if the oil leaking has stopped or at least slowed up. This will indicate how bad your "leak" is, and if you'll be splitting the tractor or not. The diesel fuel thing sounds a little far fetched, but it works, won't hurt a thing, and gets out a ton of corruption, from the hydraulic resivoir. There is a difference in oils. Just because one is expensive, it isn't neccissarily better. I would stick with a name brand. I run 4 tractors, about 1200 hours a year total, and NEVER use anything but Pennsoil. (Even hydraulic oil) I hope this does something to help you. Good luck, and Happy Tractoring! Bill

I tried your suggestion on my MF65 and it worked great. Running the diesel fuel through my transmission fixed my PTO which previously I could only get to engage when I would shut off the tractor. Thanks much for your help.

Feel sorry that you got talked into using off brand lubrication fluids. As you now see, this is not the place to squeeze a nickel. Recommend you do a complete change to the fluids recommended by Big Dean and/or your local MF dealer for your model. I would change it, fun for 40 hours, and change it again. This will completely rid your systems of the no name oils you have put in. If after the 2 changes you still have leaks, then get out the wrenches. Good luck.
